Tax Justice UK is a new organisation campaigning for everyone in the UK to benefit from a fair and effective tax system. We're looking for a head of communications to help give tax an image makeover.
- Contract: Permanent, 4 days / 28 hours a week. We actively encourage people who are interested in flexible working to apply.
- Salary: £43,750pa prorated to £35,000.
- Benefits include: 28 holiday a year prorated to 22.5 days, pension contribution and a personal training budget.

Tax Justice UK champions changes to make the tax system work better, while at the same time supporting a fair, sustainable and thriving economy. We are making the public case for the positive role that tax plays in our society. We want a motivated and creative head of communications to help us do this.
You’re someone who can tell engaging stories to shift the dominant narrative in the UK that tax is a ‘burden’. You will be the second employee and so will have an opportunity to help a young organisation grow and achieve impact. This will mean getting involved in all aspects of Tax Justice UK, including strategy development, mobilising partners and keeping the organisation running.
- Develop a consistent and powerful message on the need for tax reform to appeal to a broad range of audiences.
- Work with the Executive Director to develop and implement a hard-hitting communications strategy.
- Manage media and partner relationships, including by educating journalists and editors on the need for a fairer and more effective tax system.
- Build Tax Justice UK’s profile by getting media coverage for us and our issues in outlets across the political spectrum.
- Represent Tax Justice UK externally, including with campaign targets and in the media.
- Proactively identify ways to get Tax Justice UK’s message out there.
- Monitor external events, including the news cycle, to identify opportunities for reactive activity.
- Identify potential partners and work to build collaborations, including by getting media coverage for prominent supportive voices.
- Bring together other individuals and organisations interested in developing shared narratives on tax.
- Produce and commission light-touch content, including blogs, short reports, press releases, quotes and material for social media.
- Manage day-to-day communications, including our website, social media and blog.
- Contribute to policy development and advocacy.
- Support the sustainable growth of the organisation.
- Support the running of Tax Justice UK, for example monitoring our progress against objectives and liaising with our funders.
- Occasionally work out of hours on time sensitive stories.
- Occasionally travel.
We expect that our new head of communications will:
- Have a track record of savvy communications work in a campaigning / political context, with examples of using communications to achieve change.
- Have experience of creating and implementing communication strategies.
- Understand economic justice issues.
- Have experience of how to communicate complex issues in an accessible way.
- Have a proven record of engaging journalists, and of educating the media on why an issue is important.
- Have a strong media and political contact book.
- Be an excellent writer with a succinct, engaging style.
- Be able to build partnerships with a diverse range of individuals and organisations.
- Have excellent prioritization skills, effectively handling regular deadlines and last minute requests.
- Be able to thrive in a young organisation, where you will drive your own projects.
- Embrace an ethos of collaborative and flexible working.
In addition, the following is desirable:
- Have experience of operating in a leadership or management role.
- Be able to produce eye catching infographics and simple social media resources.
- Have experience of coordinating media responses in a ‘hostile environment’.
- Have experience of being a public spokesperson for an organisation.
Tax Justice UK was incubated by the Tax Justice Network and launched as an independent organisation in 2017. Our work is supported by technical advisors, with backgrounds in law, academia and campaigns. Robert Palmer was appointed as Executive Director in February 2018.
