Job description

Team Kenya is looking for a new trustee to take the lead on Marketing, Communications and PR for the charity.  We currently have seven trustees; six are based in the UK (North-East and Sheffield) and one is based in Australia.  As a small charity our trustees are involved operationally as well as in the traditional governance capacity of a Board member.  We have two part-time paid members of staff in the UK, based in Newcastle and Brighton.

Team Kenya works in partnership with a Kenyan NGO, Twende Pamoja, to empower communities to achieve sustainable development, gender equality and the alleviation of poverty.

Our mission is to involve entire communities in gender equality, so that girls and women in rural Kenya can create their own bright futures.

The Role

You will join the charity at an exciting time and help to shape the charity moving forward.  Team Kenya has built a great deal of evidence of our impact over the last ten years, and the right candidate will help us to communicate that to donors, funders and other international organisations to ensure that we can continue to support lasting change in Western Kenya.

What difference will you make?

Team Kenya is going through a period of change, in which we are beginning to “shift the power” so that more decisions are made by our partner organisation on the ground in Kenya and we provide the necessary funding and support.  This will ensure maximum impact for our projects as well as their future sustainability. This role will be key to delivering these changes and making the charity sustainable for the future. It is an opportunity to play a significant part in the development of an exciting and unique organisation delivering impactful projects in education, agriculture, enterprise and advocacy to vulnerable people in a remote part of western Kenya.

What are we looking for?

  • We are seeking a skilled and passionate marketing / communications / media professional with a genuine interest in educating and empowering girls and women in Kenya. 

  • Our ideal candidate will have at least 2-3 years’ experience in marketing, communications, journalism, PR or copywriting, preferably in the charity and/or international development sector but this is not essential.

  • We need someone who is reliable and hardworking; someone who can not only work autonomously but also mobilise and utilise the skills of others.

  • You will be responsible for developing communications for a broad range of audiences – the public, our members, partners and supporters.

  • An accomplished story-teller, you will put the impact of our projects for our beneficiaries at the core of our communications.

  • You will be adaptable, creative, collaborative and able to think strategically.
