Job description

Every day seven young people aged 13-24 hear the words ‘you have cancer’. Teenage Cancer Trust is here to support them from that life-changing moment, offering specialist services and influencing decision makers so they can receive tailored care and support at every step of the way.

We’re looking for a PR and Media Manager to help develop a positive media profile for our work and a platform for young people to share their experiences. Managing a PR and Media Officer, you’ll work with colleagues, partners and young people, leading work to position Teenage Cancer Trust in the media as an authoritative, clinical voice on teenage and young adult cancer. 

You’ll have the opportunity to devise media strategies that shine a light on a range of issues and the difference Teenage Cancer Trust’s services make in tough times. You’ll be responsible for harnessing political developments and the news agenda to ensure the voices of young people with cancer and heard and that their needs are understood, building strong relationships with the media.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The PR & Media Manager (Policy, Services and Campaigns) will play a role in leading and delivering media strategies to support Teenage Cancer Trust’s influencing and services portfolios.  

They will ensure and oversee a strong and sustained media profile, proactively highlighting our specialist services to support young people with cancer and maximising breaking news and external developments.

They will help ensure that influencing priorities and the issues that matter most to young people with cancer, are at the heart of our media activity. As part of this they will work with young people to support and empower them to publicly share their experiences in the media. They will also help to position Teenage Cancer Trust’s clinical expertise through national, regional and specialist media opportunities.

Working alongside the PR & Media Manager (Fundraising and Real-Life) they will play a vital role in ensuring Teenage Cancer Trust offers a first-class service to the media. Helping oversee the day to day running of the press office, they will be responsible for developing impactful and credible media messaging and securing coverage that effectively positions the charity and puts the issues that matter most to young people affected by cancer at the centre.  

The post is a key part of the wider Marketing & Communications department which is responsible for raising awareness and understanding of the charity with key audiences, increasing engagement with our brand and supporting income generation.

ROLE FOCUS

Media Strategy, Planning and Reporting

  • Oversee, support and undertake the design and execution of PR and Media strategies, with a particular focus on influencing and services priorities.
  • Contribute to and support team activity that ensures a strong and sustained media profile, including delivering media strategies as broader part of cross channels campaigns to support influencing and campaigning activity.
  • Oversee and undertake a regional media program to profile fundraising, services and young people.
  • Develop, pitch and manage media partnerships or joint campaigns with national media outlets and external partners.
  • Consider and develop documentary pitches around the work of Teenage Cancer Trust, building relationships with production companies and commissioners.
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and evaluation of the charity’s Marketing and Communications strategy and annual operational plans

Policy, Services and Campaigning

  • Establish a media approach to supporting influencing and services priorities, working with colleagues to identify and create proactive/reactive, agenda-setting media opportunities.
  • Proactively monitor current affairs, and policy/political developments in cancer and youth issues to spot and create opportunities for comment and proactive media pitches.
  • Work alongside Policy and Influencing colleagues to quickly develop media messages in reaction to major external developments.  
  • Ensure strong working relationships with NHS Trust communications teams and other service delivery partners.
  • Work in partnership with other organisations, such as cancer charity coalitions and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, to plan and develop joint approaches to media work.

Ensuring and effective and professional press office function

  • Work with the PR & Media Manager (Fundraising and Real-Life), with support from the Deputy Director of Communications and Campaigns, to ensure the smooth running of the Teenage Cancer Trust press office so that it is equipped to offer a professional service.
  • Have a particular focus on news outlets and reactive team capabilities, leading work to maximise reactive and breaking new stories.
  • Support the Deputy Director of Communications and Campaigns on crisis communications strategies, executing and coordinating activity as required. 
  • Respond to enquiries from journalists; organise media interviews, prepare verbal and/or written materials and provide spokespeople and case studies as appropriate. 
  • Builds and nurture relationships with journalists, especially including health and social care correspondents, documentary makers youth media, and national, regional and online outlets,
  • Steward and support young people and spokespeople undertaking media interviews, either in person or remotely.
  • Oversee the delivery of a comprehensive media training programme for key staff, ensuring the organisation has a range of confident media spokespeople across the UK.

Line Management and Leadership

  • Line manage the PR & Media Officer (Policy, Services and Campaigns), overseeing and supporting their work and professional development.
  • Be a role model for excellence in management, coaching, giving and receiving feedback.
  • Ensure performance targets and standards (KPIs) for direct line reports are established, communicated, met and where possible exceeded.

Working with Young People

  • Work with colleagues to ensure regular placement of real-life stories in national, consumer and regional media outlets, supporting influencing and services priorities.
  • Under the advice and guidance of the Story Manager and Services department support the stewardship of young people and their families when sharing their stories, taking a sensitive approach and ensuring it adheres with our safeguarding policies at all time.
  • Work with the Story Manager to ensure the records, images and stories of young people we support are kept up to date and we have their full consent to use them.

Relationship Management

  • Work in partnership with other organisations such as various cancer charity coalitions and the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer to plan and develop joint responses to media stories. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues, third party PR teams such as corporate partners talent agencies and hospital Communications teams to develop proactive media campaigns and events and respond to news stories as required.
  • Organise, support and execute press events, such as filming or photocalls at hospital units and other locations, acting as the Teenage Cancer Trust representative, overseeing media attendance and liaising with hospital Communications teams and Services staff. 
  • Support internal communications/profiling and relationship building to represent the Marketing and Communications team across the organisation raising understanding of the value of media and PR.

Reporting and Evaluation

  • Support, oversee and undertake the creation of daily/monthly monitoring and coverage reports and media lists, including monthly and project specific analysis evaluations.
  • Undertake and oversee media monitoring and analysis using a range of tools, developing KPIs and measuring outcomes to demonstrate the impact of activity.
  • Contribute to directorate quarterly/annual impact and outcome reports.
  • Contributing to the Marketing and Communications quarterly and annual impact and outcome reports.
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in the charity sector and PR industry identifying opportunities and approaches to inform Teenage Cancer Trust’s activities.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Participating in daily communication updates, team meetings and planning sessions.
  • The role will involve some out of hours work, including providing on-call cover for the media on a rota basis. There will also be occasional travel across the UK.
  • Represent Teenage Cancer Trust externally at events and meetings.
  • Manage suppliers and third-party agencies, briefing and negotiating prices and products.  
  • Carry out the duties of post in accordance with Teenage Cancer Trust policies and procedures.
  • Undertake any other duties that are commensurate with the post as requested by the Manager.  

DISCLOSURE AND BARRING CHECKS

This role will interact with young people and families, which may include visiting young people in hospital units and their homes from time to time and is therefore subject to an enhanced disclosure check.  

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

Internal – Story Manager and other colleague in the directorate, Policy, Public Affairs and Campaigns team, Operations and Partnerships Managers, funded staff, Music and Entertainment team, SLT and support teams such as Finance, IT, HR.

External - Young people and their families, journalists, especially national media, documentary makers, consumer press, youth media, Cancer charities and coalitions PR teams, All Party Parliamentary Group on Cancer, Hospital Communications teams, Suppliers and agencies.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Experience 

  • Significant experience of working in an in-house media team or at a PR agency in a similar role.
  • Demonstrable experience of developing and implementing impactful media strategies for policy or awareness-raising campaigns, that helped to secure change.   
  • Substantial experience of creating and using a range of PR materials and tactics.
  • Significant experience of responding to high profile issues and complex media enquiries. 
  • Setting, managing and delivering activity against objectives and KPIs.
  • A track record of successful relationship building with the media and media partners.  
  • Demonstrable success in developing and implementing integrated communications plans.
  • Experience of working with and supporting a range of case studies. 
  • Experience of line management, coaching or supervision. 
  • Experience of crisis media management, giving advice to senior leaders on reputational risk issues.  
  • Experience of monitoring and evaluating the quality and impact of media campaigns. 
  • Knowledge and experience of using social media as part of media and PR campaigns.

Knowledge and know how 

  • Excellent knowledge of all aspects of the UK media, with a good understanding of the needs of a diverse range of media.

Qualifications

  • PR, journalism, marketing or communications qualification or equivalent professional experience in those areas.

 

Experience 

  • Experience of working for a charity or in a health environment.  
  • Well established contacts with key national health and social affairs journalists. 
  • Experience of working with high profile supporters and celebrities.  
  • Experience of working with service users/case studies.

  Knowledge

  • Knowledge of line management techniques to get the best from people.
