Temwa Communications Assistant (Part-time) 

Our goal at Temwa is to harness the power of bringing communities together. We partner with communities in Malawi, empowering local people to end poverty and transform their own futures. We inspire local communities in the UK to help bring about this change.

From sharing stories of hope to promoting our stand-out events (including wrestling challenges and Totally Toto Africa), you will play a key role in shaping and using our voice to engage our supporters and widen our reach in order to achieve our fundraising goals. Our content aims to mobilise individuals, groups and whole communities into action, providing ways for them to raise, give, volunteer or partner with us to transform lives.

Location: Temwa UK offices, Portland Square, central Bristol

About Temwa

When communities come together. Temwa means ‘love, within a community,’ in the language of Tumbuka. We are a Bristol based charity committed to empowering remote African communities to end poverty and transform their own futures.

We know that without the central involvement of the communities in a project we cannot do anything that lasts. Temwa draws on 16 years of working with remote communities in Malawi to understand that many of the challenges faced by poor rural communities are linked and mutually reinforcing. To make a lasting change, we partner with the communities and work through local structures to tackle the various causes of poverty simultaneously, not just symptoms.

We have a highly skilled team in Malawi implementing this work, based out of two offices in the Northern Region. Our UK office, based in Bristol, comprises a small fundraising and operations team of six staff, 3-5 volunteer interns and a wider family of volunteers and supporters, committed to achieving this goal.

Job outline

As Communications Assistant, you will be passionate about seeing Temwa grow in strength and reach. Supported by the Fundraising and Project Teams, you will feel confident creating and implementing clear messages that spark interest, engagement and action to help us reach our goal. You will work closely with the Malawi team to gather and share individual case studies and project updates, and support the team with programme reporting, adapting your writing styles for the general public and specialists. You will be joining us at a key point in our communications and fundraising. Temwa has generated high levels of media coverage and enjoys a receptive and growing audience in the media. We are mid-way through revamping our style guide and web presence and have a growing network of engaged supporters. You will be responsible for delivering our subsequent content plan and marketing our exciting catalogue of events, maximising PR opportunities and work, and briefing our supporting design agencies to produce print and digital content. This will include some weekend and evening work to cover our events.

The successful Communications Assistant will be someone overflowing with ideas and have a way with words, combined with close attention to detail and diligence in exceeding targets. You will be able to build relationships digitally and in person with our supporters, organisations and the Temwa UK and Malawi teams as well as the press. Your work will be rooted in a deep understanding of what we do as well as emerging trends in project reporting, communications and marketing, executing all outputs with skill, intelligence and insight. As a key member of a small team, you will be someone with initiative, adaptable to different tasks and environments and have the ability to balance a varying workload.

Key requirements

Passionate about inspiring change in communities and an interest in fundraising theory and practice
Relevant qualification and/or experience in International Development,  Communications, Marketing, or other related subjects
Creative and fluent communication (both written and verbal) and strong interpersonal skills
Attention to detail in reporting and copy-writing
Possess a highly positive, ‘can-do’ attitude with a proactive and flexible approach to work
Experienced with managing social media accounts, utilising offline and online forms of marketing. Website and graphic design software skills desirable but not essential.
Willing to travel and occasionally work evenings and weekends
Commitment to Temwa’s vision and values
