About The Access Project

In the UK today, students from the most advantaged backgrounds are six times more likely to make it to a top university compared to their least advantaged peers. To change this, The Access Project supports students from disadvantaged backgrounds to access top universities, through a unique combination of tuition and in-school mentoring. We work with them to make good applications, get the grades and transition to university.

Our approach works: our students are more than twice as likely to place at top universities compared to similar peers.

Through the COVID crisis, we have remained student-focussed and continued our support by rapidly moving all provision online. In autumn 2020, we were selected as a Tuition Partner for the highly competitive National Tutoring Programme, in recognition of the quality of our work. This partnership has enabled us to expand and we now serve 1,700 students in London, the East and West Midlands and Bradford. As the country emerges from COVID, tackling educational disadvantage is an urgent social challenge - a challenge we aim to meet by expanding our footprint and reaching more students than ever before.

Why we need you

We match each of our students with a dedicated volunteer tutor, for weekly 1:1 tutorials in one of their GCSE or A Level subjects. The Head of Volunteer Recruitment is responsible for the recruitment of volunteer tutors in all regions, and as such plays a pivotal role in the provision of services to TAP’s beneficiaries. Our volunteers are all graduates or undergraduates and come to us through a variety of sources, from social media to corporate partners. We have secured record numbers of volunteer sign-ups over the past two years, and are seeking an exceptional person to help drive this work forward and create a sustainable pipeline as we continue to grow. The successful candidate will work to define and implement a volunteer recruitment strategy to take us through to 2025.

The ideal candidate for this role is a dynamic self-starter with excellent communication and relationship-building skills, as well as a good understanding of successful marketing techniques.

Duties and responsibilities

The Head of Volunteer Recruitment will be responsible for:

Volunteer recruitment in-year:

  • Defining recruitment targets annually, based on expected retention rate of existing volunteers and growth into new schools
  • Managing recruitment to sign-up targets by deadline, through a variety of sources. Current key sources are:
    • Facebook/instagram
    • Corporate partners
    • Universities
    • Membership bodies (eg Royal Society of Chemists)
    • Volunteering sites
    • Online search
    • Word of mouth

Pipeline for volunteer recruitment in future years:

  • Develop and implement a new volunteer recruitment strategy for the next four years, including how to find both the right numbers of people and the right subjects (e.g. we have a high need for Chemistry tutors) and how these will be spread across variables (e.g. by region, by online vs in-person tuition)
  • Define capacity requirements for volunteer recruitment by year based on organisational growth targets

External advocacy:

  • As the face of TAP's Volunteer recruitment work, be a positive and engaging advocate for our volunteering offer, seeking out new opportunities to publicise this with new audiences
  • Attend networking events, conferences etc to speak about TAP's volunteering offer
  • Work with TAP’s Communications team to define calendar for additional spotlights on volunteering recruitment through our media work

Communication design:

  • Manage the creation and wording of all collateral related to recruiting volunteers (by sign-up source), working with TAP’s Communications team to ensure these are in line with TAP branding and communications guidelines

Budget management:

  • Create budget annually for expected cost of recruitment activities
  • Oversee spend according to planned budget, seeking opportunities to make savings where possible

Integrated Volunteering and Partnerships teams:

  • Work closely with Volunteer Experience team to ensure shared understanding of each other's priorities, messaging to volunteers etc
  • Work closely with the Partnerships team to ensure joined-up approaches to and stewardship of corporate partners

Line management of Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator(s)

  • Line manage Volunteer Recruitment Coordinator (1 initially, with more as the function grows) - set objectives, hold weekly 1:1s, conduct mid- and end-of-year reviews. Identify development needs and training requirements

Person specification


  • Passionate about tackling educational disadvantage
  • Experience recruiting target candidates to stretching KPIs
  • Experience of corporate relationship management
  • Experience of budget creation and management
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to create both marketing materials as well as written reports of a high quality
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to create and deliver engaging presentations and pitches
  • Exceptional organisation, planning and documentation skills
  • Ability to rapidly build rapport and strong working relationships, internally and externally
  • Ability to work autonomously, with a high level of self motivation
  • Keen understanding of marketing in principle and practice
