About The Advocacy Project

We help the most marginalised and vulnerable people in London make effective choices about what happens in their lives. We also support them to speak up and help improve important services we all need. We want to make sure people across all age and care groups – including learning disability and mental health – can:

  • voice their concerns

  • understand their rights

  • make effective choices about what happens in their lives

    We do this through advocacy services which support people individually, and user involvement projects that help organisations improve the services they offer.

About Mental Health Voice and the role

Mental Health Voice is a mental health user involvement project jointly commissioned by City & Hackney CCG and London Borough of Hackney. A team of people with lived experience of mental health difficulties are involved in shaping local mental health plans and improving City & Hackney mental health services.

The role of Peer Mentoring Worker will work with Mental Health Voice and our User Involvement Coordinator to deliver a Peer Mentoring Service in City and Hackney. You will raise awareness of the service, recruiting mentors and receiving mentee referrals from people with lived experience of mental illness from all parts of the mental health community across City and Hackney local authority districts.

Key responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day delivery of the service, actively encouraging mentors to contribute to service planning and development.

  • Recruit, train and manage an agreed number of peer mentors who will offer one-to-one support to mentees.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mental health legislation, health and social care legislation, plus local and national policy.

  • Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with key staff within health and social care services and the local voluntary sector.

  • Attend inpatient meetings, groups at CMHT and local voluntary sector and community meetings to promote the scheme.

  • Make sure mentors are able to:

    • provide service users with information, support and signposting to relevant services

    • offer support, advice and encouragement to isolated individuals

    • empower people to make positive and informed life choices

  • Provide mentors with regular supervision and support the mentor/mentee relationship.

  • Provide opportunities for mentors to develop new skills through training, workshops (co-delivered where appropriate) signposting and other opportunities within Mental Health Voice.

  • Respond to all mentee referrals and manage the matching process, support people throughout the process.

  • Work with the Mental Health Voice committee to monitor and evaluate the peer mentoring scheme and make improvements.

  • Work with the User Involvement Service Coordinator to make sure contracts are delivered within budget and to agreed key performance indicators. Produce quarterly monitoring reports.

  • Collect feedback and experiences from mentors and mentees to demonstrate impact and see where improvements can be made.

  • Administrate the peer mentoring scheme, for example processing mentor expenses.

General responsibilities

Person specification

Essential

  • Lived experience of mental health difficulties.

  • Experience developing user involvement services and/or peer mentoring services.

  • Understanding of mental health issues and legislation.

  • Sound knowledge of mental health services, including current issues in policy and practice, as well as health and social care practice and legislation.

  • Ability to listen and build trust, to encourage people to express their own views and to represent service users’ self-defined interests.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal).

  • Effective in working with a wide variety of stakeholders including commissioners, service users and colleagues.

  • Commitment to working within The Advocacy Project code of conduct, equality and safeguarding policies.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and on your own initiative, to plan and prioritise your own workload.

  • Willingness to promote The Advocacy Project and the mental health service in line with our mission, vision and values.

  • Evidence or commitment to ongoing professional development.

    Desirable

  • Understanding of issues relating to the mental health of children and young people, older people and/or an understanding of the issues faced by people with learning disabilities.

  • Understanding of the Accessible Information Standard.

  • Understanding of advocacy and self-advocacy.
