Job description

We are looking for someone to lead the Today for Tomorrow campaign and advance Lord Bird’s private member’s bill, the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill, through the UK Parliament. 

This role is being offered on a 1-year fixed term contract, maternity cover basis.                    

The Role

 

The successful candidate will develop Today For Tomorrow by:

  • Advancing the Wellbeing of Future Generations Bill, through the UK Parliament and within the UK Government
  • Advancing general awareness and support for long-term policymaking among political leaders, via a targeted influence campaign
  • Building interest and support amongst the public, and via partnerships with youth, academic, civil society, and business groups
  • Coordinating the overlapping arms of the campaign (parliamentary, government and partnerships) to maximum benefit
  • Establishing Today For Tomorrow as a respected cross-party, cross-sector campaign
  • Setting and delivering a political influencing strategy
  • Liaising with existing funders to sustain the campaign

Day-to-day, you will:

  • Manage the Parliamentary Research Analyst
  • Work independently, but as an employee of The Big Issue Group
  • Each quarter, or more frequently if needed, convene a Steering Committee of partners and funders
  • Liaise closely with Lord Bird and The Big Issue senior management team
  • Normally work from the Office of Lord Bird and alongside MPs, Peers and APPGs, including the APPG for Future Generations (which Lord Bird co-chairs), but during the pandemic work from home                      

Skills & Experience

  • You are already an accomplished campaigner, with experience of overseeing a successful campaign, including office administration
  • You have a deep understanding of political advocacy, parliamentary processes and the ability to work across party boundaries
  • You have an excellent understanding of how to plan and influence decision-makers in government, Parliament, and the media
  • You understand the challenges of long-term thinking in government policymaking
  • You will have a strong commitment to long-term, sustainable development or wellbeing policy
  • You are highly skilled at building and managing relationships of all types, including partnerships
  • You have excellent spoken and written communication skills

Workplace details

This role will be based at Westminster working from Lord Bird’s office and also at the Big Issue’s head office in Finsbury Park. Initially, however, due to Covid restrictions, it is likely that some work may still be undertaken at the successful candidate’s home address.
