Job Description

Job Title: Project Officer

The Frozen Ark Project

The Frozen Ark Project seeks an outstanding individual for the exciting new position of Project Officer to assist with Resilient Heritage Lottery funded development of a UK National Archive for DNA and tissues of endangered and threatened species. The post holder will play a pivotal role within the project and will work in close partnership with the Frozen Ark Interim Director and the Frozen Ark team, reporting back to the board of Trustees in addition to liaising with a wide range of external organisations.

The Frozen Ark is a registered charity based at the University of Nottingham, whose mission is to safeguard the genetic material of animal species facing extinction for the benefit of conservation and for future generations, by providing infrastructure, expertise, partnership and coordination for endangered animal biobanking.

The main focus of the role, with the assistance of external consultants, is in the development of business plans to provide strategic direction and clarity for the organisation and its partners and to establish and implement communications and engagement plans to significantly enhance the way the Frozen Ark presents itself to, and is perceived by the public, partner organisations, stakeholders, funders and the academic community by identifying public engagement strategies and building and developing a visual identity and key messages which are vital to the continued functioning of the charity, and to help the project reach its proposed targets. The role will also involve carrying out a skills audit to harness existing skills within the organisation. The post holder will also be responsible for developing activity plans and setting up and managing evaluation processes. Applicants should have demonstrable track record in communications and public engagement, business planning and training and development of staff but also good writing, communication and interpersonal skills. The ideal candidate will also be passionate about the project and its goals, must be able to learn and work independently, yet collaborate effectively with other team members, and eager to investigate and propose new strategies for communicating and engaging with partners and audiences. Applicants can be required to travel as part of the role. The position will be based at the University of Nottingham.

This post is part-time (75% FTE = 21 hours a week), available immediately and fixed term for 18 months. The total salary (over 18 months) is £25,480

Job Purpose

To develop and deliver business plans and a communications and engagement strategy for The Frozen Ark Project

Duties and Responsibilities

Key Duties

  • Collaborate with external consultants and the Frozen Ark team to develop business plans for the Frozen Ark to provide strategic direction and clarity for the organisation and partners and to increase the involvement and motivation of the team and Trustees
  • Develop Activity Plans and set up operating processes
  • Set up and manage evaluation processes
  • Collaborate with external consultants and the Frozen Ark team to develop and establish a communications and engagement strategy to maximise the impact of The Frozen Ark to key target audiences and to improve the understanding of Frozen Ark activities to the public, focussing on the more active ways people can become involved especially through volunteering.
  • Design, develop, and produce content for the website partner section and help integrate the DNA database into the website
  • Develop formal Memorandum of Agreements between the Frozen Ark and its partners to set out the relationship and responsibilities and framework for any financial interactions
  • Contribute to research publications, presentations and reports as required
  • Work effectively and creatively as part of a team and provide support to colleagues when required

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education

  1. Degree in Business, Communications and Engagement or in Natural Sciences/NVQ 6 or equivalent Professional Experience
  2. Proven track record of experience in business planning  
  3. Experience in public engagement and educational activities
  4. Proven ability to analyse complex information and summarise appropriately
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, proven ability to convey information which may require careful explanation or interpretation in a clear and accurate manner. Includes the requisite accuracy and attention to detail
  6. A high level of general IT competence including an excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft Office package
  7. Able to demonstrate strong organisational and prioritisation skills
  8. Able to demonstrate experience of working both independently and collaboratively with colleagues
  9. Able to be motivated and self-motivate to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work and that of others, and monitoring progress
  10. Ability to demonstrate initiative and work well under pressure displaying a flexible and adaptable approach

Desirable Criteria

  1. Good networking and influencing skills
  2. Experience of working in a Higher Education environment
