Advocacy Associate

Job Description

The Malala Fund’s mission is to empower girls through 12 years of free, safe, quality education, helping them to achieve their potential and be agents of positive change in their communities. We advocate on national and international levels for changes that will give girls better access to secondary education and we invest directly in on-the-ground programmes and services. 

Reporting to the Director of Policy and Advocacy, the Advocacy Associate will manage the day-to-day functions of the Malala Fund’s London Advocacy Office. Office management duties will include ensuring that the Advocacy team has the resources it needs to effectively carry out its work. As needed, s/he will plan meetings, events and travel for the Advocacy Team and will assist Advocacy colleagues in research, correspondence and the creation of written content to further the Fund’s Advocacy initiatives.  

Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Reporting to the Director of Policy and Advocacy, help to identify and develop advocacy materials to support the Fund’s global advocacy, including internal and external briefing papers, reports, and digital assets.
  • Collect and edit materials related to the Malala Fund’s advocacy-focused grants and support the National Advocacy Manager and Programs staff as needed in international campaign work and the funding of national, in-country advocates.
  • As needed, undertake research and analysis of relevant stakeholders’ positions in relation to Malala Fund’s advocacy.
  • As appropriate, represent the Malala Fund in external meetings with peers in the education community. 
  • Coordinate travel and meetings for members of the Advocacy team, ensuring timely follow up as appropriate and quick logging of new contacts into Salesforce.
  • Develop trip budgets for the Advocacy team, track spending against projections and oversee the submission of expense reports.
  • Coordinate with the Fund’s Washington, DC based Director of Operations to ensure the London office has the materials and resources necessary to function effectively.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability

  • Undergraduate degree in a related field.
  • Minimum 2-3 years of related experience, ideally in a fast-paced, start-up setting.
  • Good knowledge of issues affecting girls’ secondary education.
  • Extremely high attention to detail and very strong organizational skills.
  • Strong experience of engaging with high level processes and individuals.
  • Strong inter-personal skills, with the ability to relate and communicate with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong commitment to the Malala Fund’s mission to empower girls through education.
  • Experience developing and implementing high-profile advocacy campaigns preffered.
