As a member of the Programmes Team, the National Programmes Manager will be responsible for managing Malala Fund’s In-country Representatives (ICRs), monitoring grants and supporting the coordination of the country strategy in the countries in which Malala Fund operates. This will include day to day management of all ICRs, monitoring and oversight of grants, and working with the wider Malala Fund team to ensure alignment of all activities in-country.
The Manager will work with in-country and advocacy staff to establish partnerships with key stakeholders in the government, non-government and private sectors and thereby help to marshal the will and resources needed to progress an agenda for expanded access to quality girls’ education. Through close collaboration with the Grants Team, they will identify future grantees to expand the Education Champion Network to reach more of the world’s most marginalised and out-of-school girls.
Responsibilities and tasks
Strategic Coordination and Management
- Work closely with the leadership of the Programmes team and other relevant staff to create national strategies for each of the countries where Malala Fund operations
- Working closely with In-Country Representatives ensure the effective implementation of each national strategy, coordinating efforts across departments
- Coordinate with the Director of Advocate Programmes to effectively deploy Malala Fund Education Champions and girl activists to support country agendas
- Work closely with the Advocacy department to ensure support for joint advocacy efforts and national advocacy initiatives
- Facilitate coordination between In-country staff and Malala Fund HQ staff outside of Programmes and Advocacy departments.
- Work with In-country staff on coordinating communications, political positioning, and representation of Malala Fund in-country.
- Identify in-country developments of interest to Malala Fund leadership and/or Board
National Operations Management
- Supervise and manage the day to day working of all In-Country Representative in all aspects of their work, including:
- Review and advise on individual workplans
- Review and provide feedback on monthly country reports
- Review and approve In-country staff travel
- Manage development of annual national budgets for operations, grants, travel and consultants in order to inform the wider departmental annual plan and budget
- Work with the ICRs and grant management staff to identify and resolve grant implementation issues and recommend grant modifications where needed
- With the support of the Director Strategy and Learning, recruit and manage future staffing for the geographical expansion of the programmes according to the strategic plan
- A bachelor’s degree or equivalent in social and political science or a related field.
- Substantial experience with international programmes with several years in management roles.
- Experience living and working in developing countries, preferably in at least one where Malala Fund implements its programmes.
- Proven experience managing teams and consultants remotely in multiple countries.
- Proven expertise in innovative programme delivery focusing on empowerment of marginalised populations, preferably women and girls in the global south.
- Knowledge of issues and networks relating to girls’ education preferred.
- Strong political instincts and proven ability to cultivate influential networks of diverse stakeholders and creativity in influence decision-makers
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to relate and communicate with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
- Ability to think critically and consistently apply good judgement.
- The ability to travel (up to 20%) internationally and a willingness to be flexible in working hours working across different time zones.
