About Us

The National Lottery Community Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK - we’re proud to award money raised by players of The National Lottery  to communities across the UK.

At the heart of everything we do is the belief that when people are in the lead, communities thrive. National Lottery funding is open to everyone and we’re privileged to be able to work with the smallest of grassroots groups right up to large UK-wide charities and community groups. 

We support a wide range of projects with grants ranging from as little as £500 to multi-million-pound programmes.

Last year alone we gave out over half a billion pounds (£588.2 million) of National Lottery funding to over 14,000 community projects across the UK, enabling even more people and communities to bring their ideas and ambitions to life. Over eight in ten (83%) of our grants were for less than £10k, going to grassroots groups and charities.

We are here to support people and communities through bad times as well as good – and that has never been so important as this year. Thanks to National Lottery players, we’ve been able to respond quickly and positively to communities working hard to mitigate the impact of COVID-19. Their efforts have been humbling and inspiring and we’re delighted to have been able to help by distributing over £400 million pounds in National Lottery funding alone across the UK since the first lockdown began in March 2020.

 

About the Role

We have an opening within our North East and Cumbria for an individual who is passionate about their community and the voluntary and community sector to join us as a Funding Manager.  Based in the North East, you will be one of two managers leading a team of remotely based Funding Officers and reporting into the Regional Head of Funding. 

In this role you will be expected to provide direction, support and guidance within the NE&C region, be accountable for an annual grant budget, and contribute towards making decisions on how to invest Lottery funding into the NE&C.  What’s exciting about this role is that you will be working across the area, creating and developing relationships whilst seeking out opportunities to maximise our grant funding investment.

Our NE&C region spans rich and diverse communities, both rural and urban. Stretching from the far NE of Northumberland to the far SW of Cumbria it includes world heritage sites, 2 national parks and numerous areas of outstanding national beauty. However it also incorporates areas of significant deprivation particularly in the coastal area south of the Tyne and on the West coast of Cumbria.

 

This role will suit anyone who wants to contribute towards the communities and the sector in which they live.  You will need to have strong management and leadership skills to support your own team of Funding Officers and work within a wider management team.  Relationship management is key, you must be a confident and flexible communicator as we work with many different customers and stakeholders, from small groups to large national organisations and government bodies.

Ordinarily the role is based out in the community, meeting groups, applicants and stakeholders with an element of working from home.  As Funding Manager, you will enjoy working flexibly, managing your own time and workload. Our regional office is in Newcastle and there will be an expectation that you attend some meetings there, probably at least once a week, as we move back into more normal working conditions post covid.

Essential Criteria

For this role, you may or may not come from a funding background, but you should have personal or professional experience and understanding of the voluntary and community sector.  You will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of the Reaching Communities programme in your area.  This requires strong people management skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to create and develop relationships.

Specifically, you will need to demonstrate your experience in these areas:

•Ability to be flexible and resilient, with strong prioritisation skills to enable you to work in a changing external and internal landscape.

•Experience of leadership and driving a high-performance culture through your ability to coach, involve, empower and manage people and teams.

•Proven ability to build and maintain excellent relationships with a range of senior level internal and external stakeholders.

•Lived experience or working knowledge of the NE&Cumbria area and voluntary and community sector.

 

Desirable Criteria

  • Strong attention to detail and sound analytical skills and judgement.
  • Experience in managing complex budgets and processes
  • A deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities. for the VCSE sector including a commitment to equitable grant making.
