The OU in Wales have over 50 years’ experience delivering supported distance learning, and in 2021 they were highly ranked for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey.
The Open University in Wales has ambitious Net Zero targets to offer Net Zero training to 15,000 students and 650 academic and non-academic staff. In addition, the OU in Wales is aiming to plan and initiate a Net Zero roadmap, comprising departmental and student Action Plans and incorporating sustainability into their operations and activities.
The role is offered as a placement through Change Agents UK. Change Agents UK Trading Ltd works as a non-profit sustainability employment business and is wholly-owned by Change Agents UK Charity. Change Agents UK have worked in Sustainability education and employment for 25 years, supporting our partners to create superb opportunities in sustainability, delivering real impact and change and providing training and skills support for our Change Agents on placement.
This role as Programme Manager will lead and inspire the Net Zero project team and oversee the delivery of the project workstreams during the project funding period.
We need an experienced project manager to plan and deliver the programme, co-ordinate the workstreams, manage the project team and relationships with external partners and suppliers. You will need a passion for sustainability, tenacity and a track record of delivering successful projects.
The Programme has several key workstreams which the Programme Manager will oversee.
- Net Zero/Carbon Literacy education – in partnership with external training partners, this will be offered to students and staff and the project will seek to maximise engagement and successful participation
- Net Zero Action Planning – in partnership with Net Positive, this project will support university departments and students to create action plans for decarbonisation
- Creation of the University’s Net Zero Roadmap
- Beyond Net Zero – launch of initiatives that are “Carbon Positive”
Passionate about sustainability, carbon literacy and the aims of this programme.
An experienced project manager with a strong understanding of project. management methodologies and a track record of delivering high-quality projects to deadlines and on budget.
Experienced in building, motivating and managing project teams successfully, as a line manager or leading in a matrix structure.
Tenacious in pursuing project actions and in moving things forward.
Experienced in the full project lifecycle: from scoping to post-implementation.
An excellent and experienced communicator who is able to adapt style and content to maximise effectiveness with different audiences.
Highly credible and demonstrably capable of negotiating with and positively influencing others to ensure project delivery.
Proactive in identifying and mitigating risks and issues; an accomplished problem-solver.
Flexible in your approach and skilled in prioritisation.

Provide effective management and leadership of the project team, including line management of the Engagement Manager, Training Co-ordinator and Project Administrator.
Develop project plans for each workstream with all necessary critical path identification, dependencies and contingencies and monitor progress throughout project.
Manage the Project Budget, ensuring activities are kept within budget allocations
Manage effective supplier and external training provider relationships within the project.
Undertake project risk and issue management, ensuring mitigation, resolution and escalation as appropriate.
Provide timely and appropriate project reporting on deliverables, budget and timescales.
Execution of project plan to deliver business requirements to time and on budget.
Oversee monitoring and evaluation activities and ensure appropriate impact and project completion reports are provided to the project funder.

Work outside normal hours: Occasional work outside of hours, for which time will be given off in lieu.
Annual leave: 30 days annual pro-rata for fixed term
Probation period: 1 month
