About The Royal British Legion

Careers in Marketing and Remembrance

Across the country, in every city and on every street, the Legion is there to support our Armed Forces community. As the largest charity of our kind, we have 180,000 members, 60,000 volunteers and a network of partners all helping us give support wherever and whenever it's needed.

Our Marketing and Remembrance teams ensure that the Legion’s key messages are delivered and understood by people across the nation. Not just by those we are here to support, but by everyone in this country who owe a debt of gratitude to all who have served. It's this mission, this scale, this challenge and the values we all live by, that makes the Legion such a fulfilling place to thrive.

Whether it’s through our One Legion Brand, press and television coverage, or integrated digital campaigns, as a member of our Marketing and Remembrance teams, you’d help ensure the unique contribution of the Armed Forces community is never forgotten. While inspiring people to engage with the Legion and make an impact for good.

This team is made up of people with a broad range of skills from an even broader range of sectors. If you were to join, together you’d implement the brand and marketing strategy, and deliver events like the Festival of Remembrance.

So, whatever your talents and expertise, if you want to give your days meaning. To put your passion into a role with real impact. To support people and be supported yourself. In an inclusive team that faces every challenge together. We think you’ll find a role here that works for you.

The Role

The Royal British Legion is searching for an established PR professional with significant experience of managing a regional press office within a national organisation. Candidates from all sectors are encouraged to apply and will be skilled in creating and implementing effective communication plans and leading on regional media engagement. The candidate will have managerial experience and be able to motivate and lead a high-performing team of four press officers, providing strong line management, setting the daily work priorities, and maintaining oversight of the day to day while keeping the long-term plan front of mind. The Regional PR Manager will lead by example, model excellence and coach the team to deliver outstanding work.

Running the regional press office includes dealing with reputational issues, drafting and issuing media statements to protect the RBL’s reputation. This will involve working with colleagues across the organisation, and with the Head of PR, to quickly develop lines that answer media enquiries from senior journalists. The nature of the role will require developing a sophisticated understanding of the RBL’s services and activities, and an ability to craft stories that capture the attention of journalists. Candidates must be confident in working alongside senior colleagues and will be expected to brief spokespersons for interviews with journalists. The role will also require earning the trust of internal and external stakeholders, both within the RBL and at organisations such as the Ministry of Defence and other local organisations.

The Legion is marking its Centenary in 2021 and as the charity looks to the next 100 years, its communication challenges focus on comprehension and relevancy. As the UK’s biggest Armed Forces charity, the Legion answers hundreds of thousands of calls for help each year, and champions Remembrance to ensure all generations understand the unique contribution of the Armed Forces community. The Legion also runs one of the most high-profile charity appeals in the world, the Poppy Appeal. Given the nature of the role, the candidate should have events experience and a successful track record of handling photocalls and media launches involving high-profile individuals or celebrities. It is important to highlight the positive impact of our work, and the candidate will have experience setting objectives and KPIs that enable them to develop insightful post-campaign evaluations. If you’re a comms manager who wants to reach people all over England, Wales and Northern Ireland, then we look forward to hearing from you.

Please note this is a remote role however ad hoc travel will be required to the Legion’s offices across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

As an inclusive employer, we welcome conversations on flexible working and any reasonable adjustments that may be required.

Diversity Statement

We believe that the compassion, understanding and service we show each, and every individual customer should be reflected in the way we all support, respect and include every individual who works with us.

It’s because of this that we have strived hard to create a One Legion culture that we can all feel part of and succeed in. It’s why we make sure that you have the opportunities you need to learn and develop. It’s why we’re invested in making RBL a truly inclusive place to work, where everyone can be themselves. It’s why you’re welcome, whoever you might be.

It’s why we welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
