We are looking for an exceptional individual to join us as the new Chair of the Board of Trustees, a unique and prestigious role offering the chance to make a real contribution to improving the lives of children and young people in the UK and overseas.
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, a charity with 20,000 members, sets the standards for paediatrics across the UK and undertakes important activities in a broad range of fields, including education and training of doctors, research, policy and public advocacy, and global child health.
Providing effective and dynamic leadership of the Board in its role of ensuring that the College is effective and focuses on its priorities, the Chair will share a real passion for the vital work. They will work closely with the President, CEO, staff and paediatricians to help guide the College as it navigates several challenges and opportunities. The changing nature of medical education, shifting expectations of young people, emerging digital technologies and the COVID-19 pandemic offer the right individual the chance to help develop its reach and attain even greater impact on behalf of its members.
Having responded swiftly and effectively to the impact of the pandemic, the College is currently developing its strategy for the next three years (2021 – 2024). The current Chair, Dame Mary Marsh, is retiring next year at the end of her five-year term after having successfully developed the new Board since its creation in 2016, and implemented key governance arrangements that have put the College on a secure footing.
We are now looking for a highly respected senior leader who can build on these improvements, and someone who can continue to ensure there is a strong culture of collaboration at Board level, building on individual Trustees’ strengths. The new Chair will be of national standing with relevant experience of, and success in, leading significant organisations (either in the public or private sector). An influential and strategic thinker, their excellent relationship-building and networking capabilities will ensure that they can identify and encourage partnerships, thinking about how we can diversify our income and driving fundraising as one of our key strategic aims.
They will actively champion diversity and inclusion across the College, and should have a high degree of tact, diplomacy and emotional intelligence, as well as resilience and flexibility.
The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health sets and maintains standards for the education and training of all doctors working in paediatrics and child health in the UK. We advocate on child health issues at home and across the world, working in more than 20 countries. Additionally, through a variety of activities, the College influences the quality of medical practice for children in hospital and in the community.
The Board of Trustees offers guidance and governance oversight on a range of issues and risks that helps shape the College’s UK and worldwide work, and the delivery of its strategic goals, principally to improve child health and ensure that our paediatricians have the skills they need to deliver excellent care.
This is a lay role, and the Chair of the Board of Trustees cannot be an RCPCH member at the time of holding office. It is non-remunerated but expenses will be paid in accordance with RCPCH policy.

Candidates shortlisted by the Recruitment Panel will be asked to attend interviews either in person at the RCPCH’s London offices or remotely, in January 2021.
Candidates will also be asked to meet a panel of children and young people, our beneficiaries who are central to our work, to discuss their understanding of our mission.
