Job description

The Vegetarian Society is a UK based charity at the forefront of ongoing work to inspire people to stop eating meat and adopt vegetarian and vegan diets for the benefit of animals, people and the planet.

Formed in 1847, we are the oldest Vegetarian Society in the world, with a rich history of activism over the past 175 years. However, our work is now more urgent than ever because of the unfolding global climate and biodiversity crisis.

As a result, we are now looking to recruit a Director of Development, a position which will play a crucial role in growing our income and profitability, developing a strategic but targeted approach to sales of our existing products and services, while taking a lead in the development of new income streams.

Working closely with our CEO and a new, aspirational leadership team, you will help the Society to meet the challenges of the next decade and beyond, building our profile, income and impact.  We are looking for an exceptional sales-focused individual, experienced in developing strategic sales and growth plans but one who is prepared to roll their sleeves up and drive performance, embracing flexible and agile ways of working to deliver against agreed income targets.

You will have a deep understanding of current and emerging B2B and B2C sales strategies and how these can be best deployed to deliver income growth within our existing services which include trademark licensing and our Vegetarian Society cookery school courses, while also overseeing increasing growth in our membership applications and individual donations.

You may have experience in some of these areas, but what is more critical is a proven track record in delivering against sales targets across a range of products and services and the ability to apply your cross-cutting strategic experience to deliver growth against these current revenue generating areas.

You will also be a creative thinker, able to spot market opportunities and develop new concepts that can be quickly developed and taken to market, as a means of securing new sources of revenue in support of our charitable goals.

Critically we are also looking for a leader, a friendly face who seeks to coach, develop and inspire the people around them to deliver to their highest potential at all times.

You will relish the challenge of:

  • Developing, implementing and delivering a sales-focused growth strategy focused on increasing the Society’s income streams
  • Leading, directing and managing the Vegetarian Society’s teams focused on generating sales, including the Society’s cookery school, our trademark licensing team and our individual giving function
  • Researching and developing new income generating opportunities focused on delivery of products and services to business and the public sector, bringing these to market and delivering substantial income growth for the charity
  • Working with our Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure all sales are supported by high quality and targeted marketing
  • Building new client relationships at key senior levels and leveraging them in the delivery of new partnerships and income opportunities

If you feel ready to take on the challenge, meet the criteria set out in the person specification and are confident in undertaking the role; we’d love to hear from you, and look forward to reading your application.

How to apply

To apply for this post, please send a letter detailing how you meet the criteria set out in the job specification along with your CV.

The closing date for applications is 9:00 a.m. on Monday 18th July and interviews to be held week commencing 25th July

We operate a 35-hour week, flexible working-time scheme and stakeholder pension. We offer 33 days annual leave including public holidays, among other benefits.

The role will be based initially at ‘Parkdale’, our Altrincham office, with potential to move to central Manchester in the near future. We operate a hybrid working model and you will have flexibility to work from home but you will need to commute to our office on a regular basis.
