Job Title: Volunteer Manager - Deptford
Reporting To: Strategic Volunteer Lead
Salary: £27,000-£30,000 per annum
Contract type: Nine-month, fixed term
Location: Deptford Depot
About The Felix Project
Felix Project is London's biggest food redistribution charity and the largest end-to-end food redistribution charity in Europe.
Our vision is a London where no one goes hungry and good food is never wasted.
We rescue surplus food from businesses, supermarkets, restaurants, and farms. This food is nutritious, in-date, and safe and includes a high proportion of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat, and fish. If we did not rescue this food, it would be at risk of going to waste. Instead, we deliver it free of charge to London charities, schools, food banks, food hubs and other organisations serving people in need. Our food is a vital lifeline for children and families, people on low incomes, people who have lost their jobs, the homeless, refugees, domestic abuse survivors, the elderly and keyworkers.
We were founded in 2016 in memory of Felix Byam Shaw, by his father, entrepreneur Justin Byam Shaw.
Purpose of the Job
Volunteers are a crucial part of key aspects of The Felix Project’s work including in the operation of our depots, volunteering in the warehouse or as drivers. The Volunteer Manager position is therefore a key role; working as part of the Volunteering team and collaborating with the rest of the Deptford depot team to plan for, recruit, train and support volunteers.
We are working hard to build positive environments for all our volunteers and this role has a dual function; to contribute to our aim to make Felix a great place to volunteer and to contribute to the smooth running of the Deptford depot through volunteer involvement.
You will be accountable for recruiting new volunteers to support Deptford’s operations and to work with colleagues to improve the overall journey, experience and retention of volunteers, to maximise the food that we can collect, process and redistribute.
Person Specification
The Felix Project recognises the positive value of diversity and is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workforce. We understand that certain groups (for example disabled people, women, and people from ethnic minorities) are less likely to apply to roles where they do not meet all of the criteria. For this reason, we actively encourage people to apply if they think they can do the role, even if they do not meet all of the requirements. We are also keen to encourage applications from those with identities that are currently underrepresented within the charity sector.
To thrive in this role you will enjoy working with and getting to know a range of people and be able to quickly build positive and effective working relationships. You are organised and efficient, open-minded, proactive and enjoy problem solving, and like to get involved - determined to make things happen and improve things wherever you go. You have an interest in how The Felix Project works and are IT savvy. You want to be in a growing, ambitious place and enjoy a busy, changing environment. You will have a desire to help reduce food waste and/or fight food poverty.

At Media Trust, we believe it’s by giving everyone a voice that we’ll get to a more equal society. That’s why we’re working with hundreds of charities to strengthen their storytelling, advocacy and campaigning, press engagement and social media. We do this through media, communications and digital skills training delivered in partnership with our media and creative industry partners and by matching media industry volunteers with charities looking for help with content creation and other comms support. At the same time, we are working with hundreds of young people and talent from under-represented communities to give them the skills, access and mentoring to break into the media.
About the Role
Do you want to lead innovative and impactful programmes to strengthen the communications, campaigning, storytelling, media engagement and digital skills of organisations advocating for social justice and systemic change?
We are looking for a dynamic and proactive individual with a track record of successful programme management, who is passionate about communications that drive change.
This position will report to the Head of Programmes and oversee Media Trust's thematic strategic communications programmes that strengthen the voices of charities. Our thematic programmes support cohorts of charities working in the same area, including equalities and social justice (our Stronger Voices programme) and environmental and climate issues (our Communicating Climate programme.)
In the context of rising levels of inequality, the media and policymakers need to hear from the people whose lives are most affected. In this role, you will support user-led organisations campaigning for systemic change to speak truth to power.
Our six-month strategic communications training programmes are designed to support charities and community organisations to amplify their voice, mobilise support and influence meaningful change. These programmes include in-person and virtual training, mentoring and support from industry experts, and tailored digital resources.
This role will directly manage our Stronger Voices programme, ensuring the smooth delivery of the programme, including managing our cohort of equalities organisations; overseeing the budget and timeline; managing our relationships with funders, trainers and partners; and impact evaluation and reporting.
You will also oversee our other thematic programmes (currently Communicating Climate). You will line manage the Project Manager of Communicating Climate and a Project Coordinator.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone committed to social justice, with strong programme management skills, an understanding of strategic communications and a passion for empowering the charity sector through training and mentorship. This is a highly rewarding role which offers opportunities to engage with both the charity sector and the media and creative industries.
*Please note that whilst this is a remote role, Stronger Voices is a London-based programme, so proximity to London will be beneficial for delivering in-person activity for the cohort.

About upReach
Do you think that your socio-economic background should determine your career prospects? We don't.
upReach’s vision is of a society in which everybody has an equal opportunity to realise their full career potential. Simply getting a degree is still not enough and a student from a disadvantaged background who gains a first-class degree from a top university is less likely to secure an elite job than a more privileged student with a 2.2.
We are an award-winning charity driven to address this issue in partnership with employers and universities. We help undergraduates from lower socio-economic backgrounds achieve their career potential by providing a personalised programme of support, empowering young people and overcoming barriers to graduate employment.
