Job description

If you’re keen to use social media, websites and digital communications to help a small charity thrive then this job is for you. The right candidate will have experience working in digital communications, an interest in working in the higher education sector and a passion to promote knowledge and understanding of Europe and the European Union post-Brexit.

Purpose of the Role

We’re looking for a Digital Communications Manager who can maintain and improve our use of digital tools to communicate our work in European Studies and increase participation in our events and funding opportunities. You’ll work to help drive through exciting changes at UACES, from revamping our website to developing marketing strategies for our new activities.

Main Responsibilities

  • Managing and developing our communications and marketing strategy
  • Digital production such as web pages and multimedia
  • Managing the production of our members’ newsletter
  • Assisting with the publication of our in-house journal
  • Managing our social media accounts
  • Promoting UACES’s events and activities to our membership and beyond
  • Deputising for the Executive Director when necessary

Key Skills and Attributes

We're looking for Digital Communications Manager who can show ability in a range of areas including:

  • Social Media
  • Marketing
  • Customer Relationship Management
  • Multimedia production (eg photography, videos, images, audio)
  • Production of graphics and print materials
  • Editing of digital newsletters
  • Solid administrative experience – in particular dealing with email correspondence, minute-taking, use of databases

Please don’t be discouraged if you don’t have all of the skills above.  Aptitude and transferable skills are equally important as we can offer training in some areas.

Ideally, you’ll be someone with:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Good collaboration and other teamworking skills
  • A real passion for digital communication and marketing
  • An interest in academia, higher education and/or European studies.
  • A willingness to take on a variety of tasks as is required in a small organisation
  • The ability to deputise for the Executive Director when needed



UACES is a membership organisation for academics working in the area of European Studies. We have around 1100 members from across the UK and Europe from a range of different career stages and institutions. We run conferences, events and administer funding schemes to support our members in their study. The Annual Conference is our biggest event each year and is attended by c. 450 delegates. Recent conference locations have included Lisbon, Bath and Krakow. The 2020 Annual Conference takes place in Belfast in September. UACES is run by a small team of office staff and a dedicated committee of trustees, headed by the UACES Officers (Chair, Secretary and Treasurer).

You'll be part of small and friendly team whose job it is to run UACES. The office staff are responsible for ensuring the smooth-running of the association and are involved in the following activities:

  • Organising the UACES Annual Conference
  • Administering UACES funding opportunities
  • Running the UACES Prizes (including best book, best PhD and JCER prize)
  • Assisting with the publication of JCER, UACES’s open-access online journal.
  • Liaising with Wiley, the publishers of our print journal JCMS: Journal of Common Market Studies
  • Managing the membership database
  • Managing the UACES email list
  • Working with the committee to implement new strategic directions for the association
  • Writing and implementing successful grant applications to funders including the European Commission
