Universify Education seeks enthusiastic students who are passionate about university to act as Volunteer Coaches on our summer residential and 3-day Easter weekend. You will join a team of volunteers to deliver an authentic and inspirational experience of university life to Year 10 students from non-selective state schools. In addition, you will connect monthly by phone to check on students’ progress and provide encouragement.
The need for access and outreach hasn’t diminished due to the current situation - instead it is more important than ever, as reduced school support due to Covid-19 will disproportionately impact students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Therefore, if social distancing restrictions prevent the residential being run in person our programme will still run with an online replacement - and we need amazing volunteer coaches to make that happen. We’ve already delivered an online version of our Easter residential and volunteers were fundamental to this success, keeping students engaged and energised throughout.
What is a Universify Coach?
Universify volunteers deliver monthly 1-to-1 coaching sessions throughout our year-long program, giving you the opportunity to form meaningful connections with your students. You will also play a key role in helping to run one of our week-long summer courses and residential 3-day Easter weekends at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
Our Volunteer Coaches must be incredibly enthusiastic, energetic, and motivated because they have an essential role in making the student experience exciting, challenging, and, above all, fun. This is a role for people who like action, activity and who get on brilliantly with others.
We also have two other roles available: Course Director and Group Leader. Please see our website for further information.
What is involved?
● 1 week summer residential*
● 3 day Easter weekend
● Monthly coaching sessions by phone or Skype for a year
*NB: If summer courses cannot be delivered in person, this will be replaced with an online alternative. This role will only be home-based IF courses are cancelled; we anticipate that the Easter courses in 2021 will definitely run in person so this role is not suitable for anyone who would need a purely home-based role.
What support is provided?
Volunteers receive specialist training in coaching and mentoring, led by Dallaglio RugbyWorks, as well as training in mental health first aid and safeguarding for young people. You will also have coaching support from experienced Course Directors and staff, both on the residential courses and throughout the year.
You will also have the opportunity to join our full-year leadership training programme - this will further develop your coaching skills, empower you to set and achieve your own leadership goals, and boost your broader employability skills.
