Job description

Do you want to be part of sharing the University’s life-changing support for students? Do you want to help generate time and funds to help researchers make world-changing breakthroughs? Can you deliver the communications that keeps alumni engaged with their University?

We are seeking a communications or marketing professional to help maximise alumni engagement with the University of Birmingham. This will involve writing for our alumni magazine, creating direct asks for alumni to support students or research, project managing communications projects such as thanking supporters, advising on and creating content for our social media and generating new ideas for how to keep our campaign fresh over the next five years. You will work closely with academics to understand their work and find the most accessible ways to present it to non-specialists, as part of a successful communications team.

Our University has a proud history of philanthropy stretching back to its foundation in 1900.  With a clear vision to change the lives of the people of Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain raised the funds required to build the University from citizens and corporations based locally and around the globe. Since then philanthropy has continued to play an important role in shaping the University. This autumn we launched our new campaign, Birmingham In Action, which aims to transform lives for our generation and the next by tackling some of the world’s greatest challenges.  These challenges include access to education, cancer, youth mental health, the environment (including climate change and plastic pollution) and migration.  The campaign aims to raise £400 million and secure 1 million hours of volunteering, making it one of the largest campaigns in the UK Higher Education sector.

The University’s achievements include several partnerships with other leading universities around the world and with key local partners, being the first University to incorporate a Medical School, being ranked as one of the top 100 research-led universities globally, and producing 11 Nobel Prize winners including three who received their awards in 2016.

Our student body is one of the largest and most diverse in the UK. Our students come from nearly 150 countries and our flagship outreach programmes mean that almost 25% of our student population come from disadvantaged backgrounds, one of the highest proportions in the UK.

The Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO) exists to support this academic and student community by engaging, inspiring, and celebrating alumni, individuals, and charitable funders who give their money, time, and networks to support the University’s strategic priorities.  The Office, which is comprised of 60 staff across five teams, is focused on fundraising and volunteering from alumni and individuals who are passionate about changing lives through funding various research trials, supporting student bursaries, mentoring students, and providing internships.
