Job description

upReach are seeking to hire a Senior Brand, Marketing and Communications Officer. This is an exciting opportunity to directly contribute to the growth of the charity through raising our profile and status, and to play a key role in all aspects of marketing, branding and communications. This role would suit individuals with 2-3 years experience in a branding, marketing or communications role, who have a passion for social mobility and are used to operating in a fast paced environment. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the successful implementation of an ongoing rebrand for the charity and ensure consistency throughout the charity, in addition to working on all external communication channels for the charity, including social media and website. They will be a key member of a dynamic and growing national team. 

This individual will play a pivotal role in all aspects of our communications and branding. Reporting to the Fundraising and External Affairs Manager, they will seek to raise the charity’s profile and position upReach as an expert within the field of social mobility. They will work across the organisation on all aspects of public facing work, in addition to taking on responsibility for the charity’s ongoing rebrand. They will work alongside the leadership team to form plans and strategies for upReach’s external messaging and reach, including brand management, marketing communications, digital and social media, and PR. They will create varied, engaging content to energise and excite a variety of audiences, from prospective donors to students, universities and corporate employers. They will also manage ‘aspire’, an online platform of resources providing inspiration, information and advice to help sixth-formers to make informed decisions about their post-18 options, including a Career Video Library, and a 60-page Guide which is sent to every sixth form in the UK annually. 

Core Responsibilities

These will include:

  1. Taking on the responsibility of ensuring internal consistency of how the upReach brand used, including training the team and maintaining the professional external image of the upReach brand. 

  2. Managing all aspects of ‘aspire’, our online platform of resources for sixth formers providing inspiration, information and advice to help sixth-formers to make informed decisions about their post-18 options. This includes a 60 page guide created and sent to all UK sixth forms, a Career Video Library, a teacher resource pack, website, and social media campaign for its yearly release.  

  3. Creation of marketing materials and suitable templates/designs for wider team use, alongside support from participants on the Future Charity Leaders Programme.

  4. In collaboration with the Fundraising and External Affairs Manager and CEO, developing a PR strategy to raise the profile and awareness of upReach.

  5. Leading on all aspects of our outward-facing digital communications, including social media and website, proactively keeping content current and relevant.

  6. Leading on the production of media related output (eg. press releases) and work to secure greater media coverage for upReach.

  7. Working with our Director of Programmes and Impact to market upReach to potential Associates (the students that upReach support), including social media campaigns.

  8. Working closely with the fundraising team on the marketing of fundraising events, materials and campaigns.

  9. Working closely with our Technology Lead to keep our new Alumni Platform updated and relevant, and to market and promote its use for our Alumni members.

  10. Monitoring and evaluating the performance of the charity’s marketing and communications channels and approaches and implementing improvements where needed.

  11. Supporting and working with participants of our Future Charity Leaders Programme Graduate Scheme.

  12. Undertaking other marketing or administrative tasks that are required within this role.

Person Specification 

This position would be suited to individuals who are committed to upReach’s mission and have an understanding of, and empathy with, the challenges facing those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

To be successful you should have 2-3 years experience working in marketing, communications and/or branding. The ideal candidate will be proactive, resilient and used to managing competing priorities within a varied workload. They should be flexible and willing to perform varying duties depending on the shifting needs of the charity.  

Essential Skills/Experience:

  1. Experience working in a fast-paced environment and working independently to find solutions to problems.

  2. At least 2 years experience working within a marketing, communications or branding role and a proven ability to use data and insights to make decisions and achieve a strong ROI. 

  3. Proven experience in creating content for online sources and marketing materials.

  4. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with an eye for varied and engaging content, and the marketing flair to flex stylistically for different audiences.

  5. Exceptional eye for detail, including excellent proofreading and editing skills.

  6. Creativity and a proactive attitude.

  7. Strong project management and problem solving skills, in addition to superb organisational skills to manage a varied workload.  

  8. At least a Grade ‘B’ in Maths and English GCSE (if you have extenuating circumstances, let us know)*

  9. University degree (2:1 or higher)* in any discipline, or equivalent experience.

  10. Self-motivation and an ability to work in a small team as well as independently.

  11. Ability to engage and communicate confidently with stakeholders, such as Trustees, beneficiaries, upReach partners and all levels of employees across the organisation. 

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  1. Experience of running social media platforms and campaigns.

  2. Experience working with both back and front ends of website platforms.

  3. Experience ensuring brand consistency across an organisation, and experience working on previous rebranding projects highly desirable. 

  4. Sound knowledge of GDPR legislation and regulations.

  5. Familiarity with Canva, G Suite and Zoom video conferencing software.

* The nature of the role requires a high standard of Maths and English, and the ability to quickly review a large amount of information and identify and communicate key themes clearly. Applicants may demonstrate this through the academic qualifications shown above and/or other relevant experience. As our beneficiaries are all undergraduates, a good understanding of the university experience is essential, although it is not necessary that this was acquired through personally gaining a degree.
