Job description

upReach are seeking to hire a Senior Fundraising and Events Officer. This is an exciting opportunity to directly contribute to the growth of the charity and, alongside the Fundraising and External Affairs Manager, help to shape the charity’s fundraising plans moving forward. This role would suit individuals with 2-3 years experience in a fundraising role, who have a passion for social mobility and are used to operating in a fast paced environment. The successful candidate will raise funds from a variety of sources, including Trust and Foundations and Individual Donors. They will also take responsibility for a wide range of events, and be a key member of a dynamic and growing national team.

This individual will play a pivotal role in the growth of the charity, as we seek to expand our capacity within the fundraising team and, subsequently grow our programmes. Having recently raised +£1mil for the first time in the 2019/2020 financial year, this role will build on that success through securing funds and growing our pipeline of opportunities. They will have responsibility for diversifying our income sources and will manage the existing events in the upReach calendar (including the Student Social Mobility Awards) and the development of new events as required.

Core Responsibilities

These will include:

  1. Working with the Fundraising and External Affairs Manager and the CEO to develop our pipeline and income from Major Donors and Trust and Foundations.

  2. Take responsibility for meeting KPIs for other income streams, including regular giving, advertising, Alumni donations and event sponsorship.

  3. Reporting to and stewarding of existing donors and foundations, developing an engaging ‘donor journey’ to ensure that they are kept up to date with the impact of their support and increase the value of relationships over time.

  4. Grow our portfolio of Trusts and Foundations and individual donors through researching, building relationships and creating compelling grant applications and proposals. 

  5. Take responsibility for existing upReach major events, including the Student Social Mobility Awards (SSMA) and a major donor fundraising event, in addition to growing our events portfolio as and when opportunities arise. 

  6. Supporting the development of the participants of our Future Charity Leaders Programme (“FCLP” - upReach Graduate Scheme).

  7. Undertaking other fundraising or administrative tasks that are required within this role.

Key deliverables in the first year will include:

  • Working with the Fundraising and External Affairs Manager and the CEO to reach our ambitious 2020/21 income KPIs

  • Successful project management of the BT Tower fundraising event and Student Social Mobility Award Ceremony, or virtual equivalent if required. 

  • Managing 1 individual on the fundraising and events rotation of the FCLP, a six-month rotation which forms part of our bespoke graduate scheme.

  • Developing a pipeline of leads both for HNWIs and Trust and Foundations

  • Growing income from regular giving and alumni donations

Person Specification 

This position would be suited to individuals who are committed to upReach’s mission and have an understanding of, and empathy with, the challenges facing those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

To be successful you should have 2-3 years experience working in fundraising, ideally having worked with either Trusts and Foundations, Major Donors or in Fundraising Events. The ideal candidate will be proactive, resilient and used to managing competing priorities within a varied workload. They should be flexible and willing to perform varying duties depending on the shifting needs of the charity.  

Essential Skills/Experience:

  1. Experience working in a fast-paced environment and working independently to find solutions to problems.

  2. At least 2 years experience working within a fundraising and/or events role and a proven ability to meet financial KPIs.

  3. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to engage and build relationships with a wide range of donors.

  4. Exceptional eye for detail and ability to adapt style of communication dependant on the audience. 

  5. Strong project management and organisational skills with the ability to manage a varied workload.  

  6. At least a Grade ‘B’ in Maths and English GCSE (if you have extenuating circumstances, let us know)*

  7. University degree (2:1 or higher)* in any discipline, or equivalent experience.

  8. Self-motivation and an ability to work in a small team as well as independently.

  9. Ability to engage and communicate confidently with stakeholders, such as Trustees, beneficiaries, upReach partners and all levels of employees across the organisation. 

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  1. Experience of fundraising events management.

  2. Experience of end to end grant management, including both proposal writing and reporting.

  3. Experience working with and reporting to major donors and HNWI.

  4. Experience in regular online giving, sponsorship or advertisements.

  5. Experience of conducting research and building fundraising pipelines.

  6. Familiarity with G Suite and Zoom video conferencing software.

* The nature of the role requires a high standard of Maths and English, and the ability to quickly review a large amount of information and identify and communicate key themes clearly. Applicants may demonstrate this through the academic qualifications shown above and/or other relevant experience. As our beneficiaries are all undergraduates, a good understanding of the university experience is essential, although it is not necessary that this was acquired through personally gaining a degree.
