UWC Atlantic is at the heart of a powerful global movement and at the vanguard of progressive education worldwide. Through its global network of 18 schools and colleges, of which Atlantic was the original, the UWC Movement is dedicated to making education a force for uniting people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. This underpins everything at UWC Atlantic and should be a key part of your inspiration for applying for this role.
The College serves around 360 students, aged 16-19, who travel from over 90 countries to live, study and learn together. Students pursue the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and an outdoor-orientated experiential education over two years.
With Naheed Bardai having arrived at the College this summer as the new Principal, a strategic planning process is underway in which sustainability will be reaffirmed as a core part of the College’s objectives. Ambitious plans are afoot for the evolution of the College estate, which will seek to balance the need to make large-scale efficiencies with plans for modernisation, whilst working through an ever-changing educational landscape.
UWC Atlantic is now looking to appoint a Director of Sustainability: Facilities and Operations to provide strategic vision and leadership to all business-related aspects of the College and in doing so will support the development and outcomes of all UWC Atlantic students. They will apply the lens of sustainability to all of the College’s operational activities. Operational and service excellence are central to plans to deliver a unique UWC Atlantic student experience and to futureproof the prosperity of the College.
The ideal candidate will be a passionate advocate for sustainability in its broadest sense. Committed to the deliberate diversity that is core to UWC Atlantic, candidates will demonstrate the ability to identify and address biases and systemic barriers and use culturally relevant leadership approaches to support students and employees. Entrepreneurial, innovative, and with high levels of commercial acumen, they will bring first-hand experience working in other complex organisational environments. Experience within the education sector is not essential here, but candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the mission and values of the UWC Movement. A personal alignment to UWC’s strategy on sustainability, whether it is financial sustainability and/or environmental sustainability is vital, as are additional personal characteristics such as teamwork, creativity, problem-solving and commerciality.
