We are Versus Arthritis. We are fundraisers, programme managers, volunteers, administrators, editors and accountants all doing everything we can to push back against arthritis. Together, we'll continue to develop breakthrough treatments, campaign relentlessly for arthritis to be seen as a priority and support each other whenever we need it. Over recent years Versus Arthritis has been developing its approach to developing a more comprehensive assurance framework for the charity, including the introduction of a risk and audit sub-committee of the Board, development of our risk and opportunity management approach, engagement of an internal audit service, and appointment of a legal counsel role. In moving beyond a successful two-year transformation period the charity is looking to appoint a Head of assurance as a new role for an intial period of 6 months to lead the further development in our approach to charity assurance, and embedding of this work in the charity.
Lead the completion of risk management and policy management transformational projects, that are rolling out new frameworks and approaches to this work. Oversee the design and roll-out of training for colleagues across the charity, to ensure effective embedding of culture and process into business as usual.
Lead the development of a robust compliance management information reporting and monitoring framework and work with senior colleagues to ensure effective embedding of culture and process into business as usual.
Design and implement the necessary compliance infrastructure necessary to complement the above risk management framework and ensure demonstrable organisational compliance with internal and external compliance obligations.
Design, recruit and manage an assurance team with the necessary specialist expertise and business partnering skills to deliver a suitable assurance framework for Versus Arthritis. Specialist professional expertise will be required, together with business partnering resources in both compliance and risk management disciplines
Provide oversight to the role of legal counsel, and commercial lawyer to ensure that charity contracts are appropriately negotiated, managed and controlled throughout the lifecycle of each contract, with appropriate management information developed and shared across the charity.
Work closely with the Chair of the newly formed Risk and Audit Committee, and the Committee itself to keep both engaged and updated on developments in the assurance framework, and in the related approached to risk and opportunity management, legal matters and compliance.
Act as the primary lead for the contracted internal audit service including agreement of annual plans, co-ordination of the approach to internal audit work with senior leadership colleagues, overseeing the management and clearance of the audit recommendations log, and annual evaluation of the service provided.
Progress the implementation of the anti-fraud policy and lead the development of a fraud awareness culture in the charity. Take primary responsibility for the charity response to fraud and corruption, including the engagement or procurement of specialist fraud investigation and mitigation, and any other serious incidents
Provide oversight for complaints across the charity to ensure that these are appropriately recorded and acted up. Provide an annual summary to the RAC and Board of Trustees.
Undertake any other reasonable duties, as determined by the director of planning and operations.
We are seeking someone who has
Minimum 10 years relevant experience of risk, assurance, legal and compliance supported by professional qualifications
Proven experience of building, leading, managing and developing high performing teams, including during times of ambiguity and complex change
Knowledge of charity legislative, regulatory and the governance landscape, both current and future requirements
Strong written and oral communication skills. Able to communicate effectively and authoritatively to a diverse audience, and to explain complex legislation and assurance principles.
Experience of working and leading beyond area(s) of professional responsibility and building wider links with the work of other teams across the organisation
Able to work in partnership and with people at all levels, demonstrating strong skills in networking and influencing with the ability to challenge and drive momentum at senior leadership level.
