Job description

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic finance professional to join the3million in 2022 for a 12-month maternity cover.

the3million is a not-for-profit organisation established after the Brexit referendum to give EU citizens in the UK a voice. We work on social justice issues. Google ‘the3million’ for more information about what we do.


Job Definition: 

The Finance Manager is responsible for the management and technical support of the Finance function and acts as advisor to the Chief Executive and assists in the development of the organisation’s financial strategy, modelling new projects, preparing budgets and reporting on financial performance. 

You will also be responsible for maintaining accounts on Xero and all related bookkeeping tasks. 

This position is available as maternity cover on a part-time basis (2 days a week) over a period of 12 months starting on 4 January 2022. 


Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for bookkeeping on the organisation’s accounting system (Xero);

  • Preparation of accurate and timely monthly management accounts for the organisation and individual cost centres, including variance analysis and reports for the Board. This information should include a short narrative on the current position, future prospects, and financial risks and opportunities. The reports will be tailored as necessary for the Board, relevant Committees and Management; 

  • Provide robust financial information including accurate balance sheets and a rolling cash flow forecast; 

  • Act as key point of contact for project budget holders on financial matters;

  • Carry out regular reviews of spending under various grants, alerting budget holders and CEO to any actual or potential over or underspend;

  • Work with Chief Executive and managers on fundraising bids and financial reports for funders;

  • Produce statutory accounts, files and schedules, in partnership with the3million’s accounting firm; 

  • Monitor records of all funding and funding sources and the appropriate allocation of incoming funding;

  • Monitor monthly accrual of income and expenditure, deferral of income, maintenance of reconciliation to Xero, balance sheet changes and undertake bank reconciliations;

  • Monitor the accounts mailbox and ensure invoices are included in the accounting system, answering internal and external queries as they arise;

  • Act as main point of contact with banks, service providers, suppliers (when appropriate) and auditors;

  • Other duties as requested by the Chief Executive.


Person Specification:

The post requires the holder to:

  • Be proficient in Xero Online accounting software and Excel spreadsheets;

  • Have an appropriate qualification – in full or part – in accountancy;

  • Be comfortable with the financial systems typical of a small organisation, including financial monitoring and reporting to a range of different funding sources;

  • Have some experience of projects finances and understand the financial implications behind an efficient delivery strategy;

  • Be honest and reliable;

  • Ability to work on own initiative when appropriate and seek guidance when necessary;

  • Commitment to the values of a small organisation that works on social justice issues in support of EU citizens in the UK.


Working Conditions: 

Reporting to the CEO 

Salary: between £24,576 and £28,602 depending on experience.

Place of work: remote working but you may be asked to travel to the3million offices in Bristol (near Montpelier train station) for your induction, or as and when required. 

Contract type: Fixed-term contract for 12 months. 

Hours: Part-time (2 days / 14 hours per week);

Start date: 4 January 2022
