Visionary is a UK wide membership organisation for local independent charities that support blind and partially sighted people. We provide a wide range of support to enable our members to be the best they can be – visit our website for more details on what we do or ask one of our members!

Thanks to a significant funding package from the Thomas Pocklington Trust, we have four exciting vacancies. If you want to play an active and influential role in improving the community sight loss sector we want to hear from you.

All posts are UK wide and full time. We are a home-based team with frequent travel and overnight stays. You will be resilient, curious, open to change, creative and innovative – with an eye for detail. We are recruiting for both a Communications, Training and Events Lead and Co-ordinator.

About this role

The main purpose of this, and all Visionary roles, is to play an active and influential role in improving the community sight loss sector so that people living with sight loss have equality of opportunity, wherever they are in the UK.

This role is responsible for the delivery of all Visionary communications and events which ensure the delivery of a consistent message and raise the profile of Visionary and the community sight loss sector. You will lead on our website and resources, ensuring current and accurate information, opportunities and events are delivered throughout the year.  This role supports our members, increases their knowledge, enhances their understanding and facilitates their development. This ultimately leads to a stronger sight loss sector – and the end result is a positive experience and equality of opportunity for blind and partially sighted people. 

This post is pivotal in capturing information from your colleagues and sharing it with our members. But to know what our members want to know you need to know them – so you will also spend some time understanding who our members are and how best to communicate with them. 

Your first task – in addition to keeping all our communications running – will be to develop our communications and marketing strategy based on what you have learned about our members. 

You will lead on how we communicate with our members and partners – including our membership renewals. You will work very closely with the Knowledge, Research and Compliance Lead to make sure all communications are directed appropriately. You will work with all your colleagues to ensure that our marketing and communications are interesting and relevant to the people receiving them. You will be the person who clarifies our message and ensures that Team Visionary sticks with it. If we have a call to action you will make sure we understand what that is, if we have achieved it and how/why we achieved it.  

What kind of person likes to work here?

First and foremost, you should have a desire for social change.  You might not fully understand the importance of people with lived experience being in control of their own destiny – but you should want to find out why that is a good thing! 

You will be someone who likes to work with others, listen and hear and come up with a plan if indeed a plan is what is needed. You will enjoy talking with people, learning about what they want from us and putting in place effective ways of sharing information and knowledge. You will get a buzz from organising events – and you are super-efficient.

You work well with a deadline and you are not afraid to get assertive (with respect) with a team of strong personalities in order to deliver something amazing. You are creative and innovative in addition to being practical and organised.  You will be able to remain calm and composed when things go wrong and get it all back on track. You like being part of a team but you are ok on your own.

If you are open to new ideas and feel comfortable with change then you are probably going to be ok. People who like the same routine every day are likely to explode. 

Finally – we like to laugh. Quite often at each other. So this is no place for divas.
