£30,000 - £35,000 per year
Permanent, Part-time, Full-time
Job description

Voice 21 is the national oracy education charity. We exist to empower every child to use their voice for success in school and life. Our work transforms learning and life chances through talk by increasing access to a high-quality oracy education for those that need it most.

Over the past five years, Voice 21 has grown from operating in a single school in London to a national organisation, with a network of over 600 schools across the country. We are now embarking on our new five year strategy which aims to deepen our impact on outcomes for this generation of children and young people and those to come by significantly increasing the number of Voice 21 Oracy Schools in areas of high need and mobilising a movement of teachers and schools. To help us achieve this, we are recruiting for a number of new roles designed to enable the organisation to reach and support more schools,  improve our ways of working and deliver our ambitions.

Role purpose

Each year, Voice 21 works with hundreds of schools and is committed to achieving impact with each of them. Our new membership offer, Voice 21 Oracy Schools, is a blended model of one-to-one consultancy support, engaging and immersive courses and online learning. As Schools Lead, you will lead the delivery of our membership offer, using your expertise, creativity and determination to support our schools to provide a high quality oracy education for every student.

Through building strong relationships with schools, you’ll clearly and credibly communicate Voice 21’s ideas and approaches, supporting schools to overcome barriers to implementation, and apply them in their own context.

Your drive and determination to achieve impact means that you see each school you work with as a learning opportunity, and you’ll use your growing knowledge of oracy practice in schools across our network to continually build your own expertise.

You need to be passionate about relationship building, education and social mobility and have unashamedly high expectations for the quality of the support you deliver and impact you achieve.

Key responsibilities

  • Acting as the main relationship holder for your portfolio of schools and working with them over a year or more to implement and embed oracy approaches.

  • Working with school leaders to design and implement bespoke improvement plans for their oracy provision.

  • Leading professional development to groups of teachers.

  • Writing progress reports and tracking and monitoring the impact of your work in schools.

  • Nurturing and managing ongoing relationships with teachers in schools that we work with.

  • Providing feedback on our content and processes to enable us to continually improve them in line with school and teacher needs and expectations.

  • Interacting with the wider oracy education community, including presenting at events and conferences and writing blogs and articles.

  • Contributing to the identification of good practice in oracy, including case studies.

  • Working with colleagues across the organisation to provide a high-quality school and teacher experience.

  • Identifying and carrying out other tasks commensurate to the level and spirit of the role as required.

Your experience:

  • You have experience teaching in UK schools (primary or secondary)

  • You are passionate about oracy and have used talk to support learning in your classroom.

  • You have experience leading whole-school change and inspiring teachers to embrace new approaches and ideas.

  • You have a knowledge of a range of speaking and listening techniques and contexts for oracy, these could include: debate, dialogic teaching, storytelling, public speaking or communication and language development.

We are particularly interested to hear from applicants who are Welsh language speakers and from applicants who have experience working in schools serving areas of high deprivation.

Person specification:

  • You are an excellent communicator both when working in a small team and when facilitating learning for large groups of adults.

  • You are flexible, can think on your feet and can bring your own experiences to the work we do.

  • You are confident, able to rise to challenges and look for solutions.

  • You are highly-organised, proactive and can prioritise and manage a varied workload.

  • You are willing to travel nationally on a frequent basis during term time; this will include regular overnight stays.

You will love this job if:

  • You are passionate about oracy and the potential it has to transform outcomes for children and young people.

  • You are personable; you nurture and value relationships and get a buzz from talking to teachers about their schools.

  • You are a sharer and get excited about supporting other educators to develop their practice.

  • You are keen to develop an understanding of the educational picture across the UK by working with teachers and schools nationally.

  • You strive to continually learn and develop your craft and support others to do so.

  • You want to join a fast-paced and fast-growing team with big ambitions, and are prepared to be flexible to help us achieve these.

Location: Home-based with frequent national travel to attend meetings and work with schools.

Contract: This is a full time post, but we would welcome applications from those looking for 0.8 FTE.

Interview date: Phone interviews will take place 13th - 15th October with second interviews provisionally scheduled for 19th October (online).

Start date: December 2021/January 2022
