Volunteering Matters

At Volunteering Matters we use volunteering’s unique power to bring people together and build stronger, more resilient communities across the UK.

We bring people together to resolve some of society’s most complex issues.  From social isolation and loneliness; improving health and wellbeing; building skills, confidence, and opportunity; to ensuring young people can become change makers in their community, the impact that we make is great.  And we won’t stop until everyone in the UK has the opportunity to thrive.

People-led and impact driven, we are a national charity that is deeply embedded in local areas across the UK.  We operate in five regions: London and the South East; Wales and the West of England; East of England; the Midlands and North West England; and Scotland and North East England.  We also have an Employee Volunteering Team with over 25 years’ experience, acting as a broker to provide tailor-made solutions to employers. We turn local knowledge and energy into action and progress, building stronger communities and a better future for all.

This is an exciting time to be joining the team.  We’re changing the way we work to meet new ambitions and make sure our impact continues to grow alongside out business.

Role Purpose

We are looking for a creative and ambitious Communications Coordinator to join our small Communications Team. Our friendly team supports the work of Volunteering Matters across the UK, and the role of the Communications Coordinator plays a key role in helping us make the most of opportunities open to us externally and internally.

Your core responsibilities will be getting to know the work of our staff and volunteers across the UK; a key priority is collecting updates from our projects so that we can share our impact with external and internal stakeholders. You will be a big part of a small team responsible for supporting our projects, so you will assist the team in areas of organisation and administration as well as implementing filing and organisational systems. You’ll help with ad hoc graphic design, video editing, and administration.

During 2022, the Communications Team will work on a range of key projects, including the development of work on our family of brands, the delivery of two new websites as well as supporting our Partnership Team on our 60th anniversary campaign.  And lots more! It’s a busy, fast-paced role which requires a can-do attitude and an ability to adapt and prioritise tasks as they arise.

Our volunteers and the people we support are at the front and centre of what we do, so a strong commitment to our values is essential for this role.  A belief in the power of communities with a desire to platform volunteers of all ages and from all backgrounds is core to our work...

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Liaising with staff across the organisation to update and maintain our organisational calendar
  • Creating and maintaining a filing system for the Communications Team’s materials
  • To monitor our press coverage in local, trade and national press, capturing this information and creating a media log

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and a passion for facilitating inclusive communication
  • Excellent written communication skills; able to write excellent copy that educates and engages audiences from website blogs to comments on social media
  • Excellent organisational skills and an ability to prioritise while meeting tight deadlines
  • Strong administrative skills with a keen eye for detail including proof reading
  • Confident using a camera for photography and video content
  • Passionate about using story telling as a method of creating content that engages audiences
  • Able to engage appropriately and effectively with a range of stakeholders through a variety of means
  • Excellent organisational, prioritisation and time management skills

  • Experience using Wordpress, Mailchimp and Google Analytics

  • Experience of helping to organise events, shoots and/or campaigns
  • Experience using Microsoft Teams, Sharepoint, Google Analytics, and Zoom
  • Experience of working in the voluntary sector and/or volunteering in your community
