The Homelessness and Housing Law Specialist Advisor will work alongside our client services teams across England, to prevent and end homelessness for people we support. Providing expert advice, support and advocacy to our staff and members in the most complex cases.
Salary: £38,585 (regions) or £42,746 (London) per annum
Hours: 35 hours per week (open to compressed hours in line with Crisis’ Flexible Working Policy)
Location: To be based in any of the Crisis Skylights in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Liverpool, Birmingham, Oxford, South Wales, Central London, Croydon, or Brent, but with home working as an option in line with Crisis’ Hybrid Working Policy
About the role
We are looking for an expert on homelessness legislation (the Homelessness Reduction Act) and relevant housing legislation to contribute to Crisis’ mission of ending homelessness. You will provide advice and casework covering complex areas of both housing and homelessness legislation to frontline employees working directly with people experiencing homelessness and at risk of homelessness in England. You will be an advocate for our members, by using housing law knowledge to request temporary housing from local authorities, for those who are street homeless. You will have the opportunity to produce housing law briefings, template letters and a toolkit of resources including checklists to support staff when working with beneficiaries.
About you

Demonstrable track record of successfully preventing and relieving people’s homelessness through advocacy and the application of relevant homelessness and housing law, including complex cases such as people with different immigration status.

Expert knowledge of relevant homelessness and housing legislation, including Housing Act 1996 Parts VI and VII, Homelessness Act 2002 Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, Protection for Eviction Act 1977, Landlord and Tenant Act 1985

Knowledge of the issues affecting homeless people and the impact and interaction of welfare and immigration policies on homelessness

Familiarity with local authority housing options services and their processes
You may have experience in, Housing and Homelessness Law, Local Authority Homelessness or Housing Options teams, Advice and advocacy, specialist casework.

The Role
You’ll lead on the procurement, management and monitoring of different service contracts across our business, from grounds maintenance to tree surgery! You’ll be developing and implementing contract management frameworks, as well as undertaking regular performance reviews.
Customer involvement is a key part of this role, gaining their insights and support when services are procured, and ongoing monitoring, through inspections and customer satisfaction. You’ll be responsible for ensuring customers are kept informed about performance and variations to contracts, as well liaising with customers to resolve issues and complaints. You’ll also be responsible for providing performance related data for internal and external reporting.
Our ideal candidate?
- You’ll be a customer-focussed individual with experience of developing and managing stakeholder relationships to provide high standards of service.
- You’ll have knowledge of communal / estates management services and budgets, contract management frameworks and financial controls.
- You’ll also have experience of managing others, as well as monitoring performance.
- Having knowledge and exposure to ensuring and enhancing compliance is key to this role, as well as being keen to continuously improve services.
- Managing approximately 15 contracts at different stages of their lifecycle, you’ll be highly organised, and be able to effectively manage competing priorities and deadlines.
- Ideally, you will have a sound knowledge of service charges and how these are calculated, although this is not essential.

As the Depaul Group continues to experience significant growth and increases its impact, you’ll lead the effective financial and governance support provided by DPI to its subsidiaries. Our Birmingham hub specialises in providing housing advice and homelessness work, with a particular focus on families and people experiencing multiple disadvantage. We work in partnership with a range of organisations to improve the underlying systems that prevent people from living securely in suitable, safe, affordable accommodation.
About the role
The role of Team Leader is essential to the day-to-day management of the Hub and, in particular, the delivery of front-line services, contracts and projects. We’ll rely on you to lead and supervise the staff and volunteer team that delivers specialist advocacy, empowerment, advice, and systems change within their local community. Supporting the Hub’s strategic lead and management team to deliver our strategy locally will be important too, as will planning and supervising casework, monitoring the effectiveness of our services and helping to promote them. We would also consider people to join our Bank team which is £12 per hour, plus holiday pay accrual and paid training, working shifts as and when they are available on a zero hour basis.

The Role
You’ll play a vital role in ensuring that our 35,000 homes are places that people love to live in. Working in both occupied and empty properties, you’ll undertake electrical installations, servicing, inspection & testing, rectify faults and maintain electrical systems and appliances to a high quality standard, in accordance with the current edition of IET Wiring Regulations.
