Job description

Xenia is a grassroots women’s organisation on a mission to create more inclusive, equal and welcoming communities. This is where you come in, we are looking for the newest member of Xenia’s staff team to drive our fundraising and development going forward, with the dedicated support of other members of the Organising Team and Trustee Board. This role is right for you if you are energetic, generous in your leadership, and detailed in your approach and a skilled fundraiser. 


Role Description

Role Title :Organiser – Development

Time commitment: 2 days/week (Wednesdays, plus one other day)

Length of contract: We view this as a core role at Xenia and will hope to extend contracts on a yearly basis. Initially this contract is till the end of March 2022, but with funding permitted will be extended (subject to references and performance)

Contract type: Self employed freelance

Salary: £150 per day (flat rate across the organisation)

Start date: November 2021


Purpose of the role

The aim of this role is to drive the next phase of the organisation as we grow our external profile and development. As such, this role is both proactively outward-facing, and internally strategic.

Externally, your purpose will be to develop and maintain a strong network, driving forward the sustainable development of the organisation by reaching out to potential training partners, funders, and media.

Internally, you will work closely with other members of the Organising Team and Trustees to develop fundraising and communications strategies, in line with organisational strategy.

Key responsibilities

  • Strategic partnerships and external relations
    • Developing professional strategic relationships with the wider migrant, ESOL, women’s, heritage, and loneliness sectors
    • Writing blogs, speaking at conferences, contributing to sector discussions
    • Being a spokesperson for Xenia


  • Securing c. £100,000 per year from a range of sources, with support from the Xenia fundraising sub-group made up of Organising Team members and Trustees
  • Maintaining major donor relationships, and establishing new relationships
  • Leading on public fundraising campaigns (as required) or other new sources of income generation as agreed with the fundraising sub-group


  • Strategy development
    • Develop Communications and Fundraising Strategies, with support from Organising Team members and Trustees

Alongside the Organising Team and Trustees, contribute to development of organisational strategy and developing plans to grow the organization. 

  • Scaling
    • Working with other staff to deliver training and consultancy work
    • Being responsive to queries, setting up training, reaching out to potential clients/trainees; organising events to showcase training offer.
  • Other
    • Play an active role in the Xenia Team, including attending Organising Team meetings, Trustee meetings and relevant sub group meetings.
    • Conduct all work in a way that reflects the values of Xenia.
    • Commit to personal development in the role, attend training and development opportunities as is beneficial for you and mutually agreed.
    • Attend a Xenia workshop every 1-2 months in addition to your other responsibilities, for which you will be able to take time off in lieu*.
    • This job description does not cover all the tasks the postholder may be expected to complete, and they may be asked to undertake tasks as reasonably agreed with the postholder, the Organising Team and Trustees.

* Please note that these workshops take place on Saturday mornings 10am – 1pm, and Organising Team members support from 9.30am – 2pm (during lockdown our online sessions are slightly shorter). While we are aware that this may not be possible for all good candidates for this role, it is important that the postholder has an in-depth understanding of the activities of the organisation and therefore this is a requirement.

  • You are an excellent independent worker, who can self motivate and organise and is comfortable working in a non-hierarchical setting.

Skills and Experience


  • Experience of securing funds and donations, particularly from charitable trusts and foundations, major donors and corporates, and experience of managing funder relationships
  • Experience creating strong networks and being a public spokesperson for a group or organisation
  • Experience in building partnerships within the voluntary and social enterprise sectors, particularly related to trading (training & consultancy)
  • Excellent oral communication with a range of audiences, and a confident public speaker
  • Excellent written communication, for example blog writing, funding applications, public statements, social media
  • Confident writing and speaking in English


  • Experience in following sectors: migration, heritage, social integration, loneliness, women, equalities.
  • Experience developing and implementing strategies
  • Experience working in a small charity/social enterprise/start up
