Job Description

We are starting a brand new young peoples charity in England called Youth Mix that aims to work in areas of need that bring young people aged 16 to 26 years old together in unity, while also providing a number of positive and life enhancing events and programmes that give young people access to new opportunities and give them new and enhancing life experiences that could change their lives.

Our events and programmes will be one off and short term outcome focused and evidential which will cover topics related to the needs of young people such as life and social skills, personal development, employability skills, healthy living and wellbeing (including sexual health and relationships) and other topics relevant to young people in England. We want to give young people the tools and experiences to help shape them, their future and help inspire a generation that equips them to deal with adult life.

We will also be a young people led charity, where young people will be involved and at the heart of the charity, including taking up key roles within the charity, making us a unique charity.

Our purpose is to UNITE, EDUCATE, INSPIRE and CREATE opportunities for young people, changing their lives for the better and to help them aspire to greatness, inspiring a generation.

Young people need us more than ever with massive increase in youth violence and crime, high levels of youth suicide and self harm and the increase in mental health issues facing young people, increase in poverty and young people feeling they have less of a voice and place in todays society.

By getting involved as a trustee, you have a real chance to make a difference to the lives of these young people, providing them with opportunities and inspiration to help them reach their full potential.

Trustee Opportunity:

We are looking for a Trustee who shares in our values and vision and has the skills, qualities and expertise to help a startup young peoples charity in England (starting off in London as a foundation to use across other areas of England) and who is an active and engaged member of the board, bringing with them self motivation, time and dedication and also bringing with them contacts/networks who can assist us in areas of need.

Trustees will be involved in setting our strategic direction as well as determining our mission and vision. They will need to be available to attend board meetings in person up to six times per year with additional operational meetings and sub-groups as necessary.

In addition to board meetings, other contact - usually by email/phone - will be necessary. Trustees may be asked to attend occasional evening meetings and events as a representative of the charity.

The time commitment for a trustee is expected to be up to a 6 hours per month.

To help us set our strategic focus with clear goals and objectives, we are particularly keen to recruit a Trustee with experience and skills in the following areas:

  • fundraising
  • governance
  • operations
  • social care
  • training and development
  • outcome, quality assurance and evaluation/evidence

In addition to any special areas of expertise you can contribute, the duties of a trustee are:

  • to ensure the organisation complies with its governing document, charitable law and any other relevant legislation or regulations to ensure the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document and applies resources exclusively in fulfilling its objectives;
  • to safeguard the good name and values of the organisation and represent it at functions and meetings as appropriate;
  • to be collectively responsible for the actions of the organisation and other trustees, while ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation;
  • to ensure the financial stability of the organisation;
  • to make sure the organisation is properly insured against all reasonable liabilities;
  • to declare any conflict of interest while carrying out the duties of a trustee;
  • to use any specific knowledge and experience to help the board reach sound decisions.

Below are examples of the sorts of knowledge and experience we are looking for. If you don't feel you match all the below, don't worry. Successful boards are about finding a balance of skills, knowledge and experience from a mix of individuals with a wide range of backgrounds:

  • an understanding of the role of a trustee and corporate board member;
  • experience of operating in a senior role;
  • experience of fundraising;
  • experience of youth work, teaching, training or development;
  • broad knowledge of management and governance issues;
  • an understanding of the work of the voluntary and community sector would be extremely helpful.

The sort of person we are looking for would be:

  • a strategic thinker;
  • have a sharp mind who exercises good judgement;
  • an effective communicator;
  • proactive, willing to offer constructive challenge and support judgements;
  • a team player who respects different views and is able to work with board colleagues;
  • able to build strong relationships and champion Youth Mix.

Their personal qualities would include:

  • being able to demonstrate drive and determination;
  • bringing a commitment to devote sufficient time, preparation and effort to meet the responsibilities of being a trustee;
  • demonstrating integrity, honesty and flexibility;
  • demonstrating active listening skills and being open to the views of others;
  • showing commitment to inclusion and diversity;
