Bromley, Greater London
Voluntary
Job description

Your Voice in Health and Social Care (YVHSC) is an independent organisation that gives people a voice to improve and shape services and help them get the best out of health and social care provisions.

YVHSC specialises in providing Health and Care services that offer effective engagement and involvement that impacts on community wellbeing and development. Using our expertise we involve people in ways that are both efficient and inclusive, and so can maximise the impact of our engagement.

What is a Parent Representative?
The role of parent representatives is to inform decision makers about the
experiences of parents and to ensure that parents’ views are fed into decisions about children’s services at an operational or strategic level. Through this process parents and professionals reach a common understanding about effective services for children and young people who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in accordance with the Children and Families Act 2014. Their combined information and perspectives result in joint planning that leads to more effective services.

Tasks
• Arrange and attend meetings, events and services where parents of SEN children attend and collect their feedback.
• Create a report based on the feedback you have received
• Attend and deliver your report at meetings with the aim of informing strategic and operational decisions.

Considerations of the role

To be truly representative, parent reps must be prepared to receive the views of parents from a huge range of backgrounds whose children have a wide range of impairments.
That means have excellent communication skills, being empathetic and having good interpersonal skills. To this end community languages will also be considered a plus.

Parents are most often stopped from participating because of times of meetings. Which is why we need reps that can be available at the same time as parents.
e.g. 10am -2pm so that parents can pick up children
• avoiding school holidays
• meetings in the evenings

If you think that you are the right person for this role please get in contact with us so we can arrange an interview.

Practical Considerations

Reimbursement for parent representatives

YVHSC will reimburse volunteers for out of pocket expenses in accordance with the YVHSC expenses and remuneration policy.
