We were formed in 1982 when we were set up to serve the mental health community.  We are based mainly on the site of Springfield University Hospital Mental Health NHS Trust.  Springfield Law Centre is unique as a working model of a health justice partnership.

We are seeking a for a new Director & Head of Legal Practice to take forward this unique, niche Law Centre.  There is an opportunity for expanding the work of the Law Centre and showcasing the worth of health justice partnerships.We are looking for an energetic and compassionate lawyer with a broad experience of either housing or community care casework and representation, who is capable of being a legal aid category supervisor in either area, who has the confidence to lead the team and to develop it so that we can continue to make a real difference within the community.

Qualifications and experience

1. 5 years’ PQE qualified lawyer, with demonstrable experience of management at a senior level.
2. Ability to meet the supervisor for the Legal Aid Agency contract in either housing or community care.
3. A track record of implementing and managing change. 
4. A track record of leading and motivating others demonstrating strong people skills.
5. A track record of innovation and problem solving.
6. Appropriate skills and experience that demonstrate an ability and commitment to manage staff effectively. This should include support, supervision, and appraisal and performance management.

8. Experience of managing a Legal Aid Agency Contract and Legal Help matters, with billing targets.
9. Ability to bill all types of legally-aided work and to report to the Legal Aid Agency.

11. Ability to draft appropriate documentation in your specialist area of law.

The Management Committee consider the range and number of duties to be a full-time role and that any reduction from a full-time role will result in a division of duties to accommodate all aspects of the Law Centre’s needs and aspirations.

A fantastic and fast-growing charity focused on providing support and advice for carers of children is seeking a Payroll Manager on a part-time (3 days per week) permanent basis.

With headquarters in London, the role is offered on a hybrid basis – with 1 day per week required onsite. The charity has a turnover of around £7 million, with approximately 80 staff. Their focus is specifically to provide support for kinship carers of children – grandparents, siblings and other family members who support children when parents are unable to provide care.

The Payroll Manager role will make up part of a new finance team structure. The role reports to the Head of Finance, and other team members include a Senior Finance Officer and Finance Director. The role is paying £42,000 (FTE / pr-rata) inclusive of London weighting. Please note a fully-remote option is available, however in this instance London weighting would not apply, so the FTE/prorate salary would be £38,774 per annum.

The role will cover responsibility for all payroll operations, ensuring that all payments are accurate and on time and that appropriate and accurate information is provided to the Head of Finance, HMRC, pension providers and other external bodies. The payroll is run by an external bureau. You will also be required to support the Head of Finance with across a wide range of financial accounting duties.

The charity has recently implemented a new finance system (Business Central) and has secured some new grants and contracts, so there may be the chance to grow and progress as the charity continues on this path.

Typical duties will include:

-Ensure the timely processing of monthly payroll, including absence and statutory leave as well as various categories of staff payments and deductions; maintaining a separation of duties with relevant HR colleagues

-Check all payroll and pension deductions each month and resolve queries with the payroll bureau as necessary; ensuring that an appropriate and up to date audit trail is maintained which include FINAL reports.

-Ensure timely payments are issued to HMRC, pension providers and in respect of other payroll deductions to enable Kinship to comply with its statutory obligations

-To be proactive in the identification and resolution of any pay anomalies, errors, issues; ensuring that payroll reports are reconciled monthly and agree with control account values

-To contribute to knowledge management and building expertise within the Finance/People teams with regard to payroll; identify process improvements to eliminate exceptions, errors and omissions of data.

-To ensure that all payroll outputs are appropriately authorised and signed-off, in accordance with London Youth’s payroll procedures, and filed on shared drives; that records are robust and audit-ready.

-To provide a range of management information as required, including salary allocations across a wide range of projects and activities.  Working closely with the Head of Finance and respond to queries from internal and external sources.

-Ensure that appropriate online filing systems are maintained and kept up to date so that they can be used to provide information, resolve queries and provide a necessary audit trail

-All relevant monthly payroll processes and statutory and other deductions

-Supporting the Head of Finance with the completion of year-end accounts, reconciling control accounts and management/statutory accounts

Candidate requirements:

-Demonstrable prior experience in a Payroll Manager role and/or a recognised Payroll or Finance qualification

-Significant experience in managing payroll – either internally or via an external bureau

-An understanding of GDPR and legislative & contractual elements of payroll

-Strong understanding of charity finance and charity SORP accounting and experience contributing to financial accounting and financial reporting

-Experience of a medium/large accounting package or ERP such as Agresso, Business Central. SAP, Oracle, Great Plains, Exchequer etc

-A positive and tenacious attitude

-A values-driven and collaborative approach to work

FP&A Manager | London | Interim | £300 - £350 per day (Umbrella), 4 months +

For a leading UK charity, we're recruiting an Interim FP&A Manager for at least 4 months. Reporting to the Head of Finance, the Interim FP&A Manager will support the charity in providing first-class financial planning and analysis support, lead on the reporting of restricted funds, coordinate the production of management accounts, and business partner the Transformation Team and CEO.

What you'll be doing:

• Production of insightful monthly management accounts and consolidated reporting, partnering with, and challenging, budget holders to understand variances whilst producing meaningful MI to enable leadership to make informed decisions
• Forge a strong business partnering service, working closely with the operations team, the Strategy, Digital and Transformation directorate as well as the Finance and Commercial and Chief Executive Office.
• Play a lead role in Transformation projects, partnering the Project teams and Head of Transformation to provide finance support
• Review budgets for all submissions for Restricted Funded grants and other fundraising bids
• Review financial reports for all projects from restricted funds
• Lead the annual budget production and quarterly updates to year-end forecasts for all restricted funding sources in collaboration with Head of Finance and Finance and Commercial Director

Organisational Background

The Council for At-Risk Academics is a UK-registered charity founded in 1933 under the leadership of William Beveridge, to rescue academics suffering persecution under the rise of Nazism and facilitate their continued work in safety. Sixteen Cara Fellows from the 1930s and 1940s became Nobel Laureates, and many more innovators in their fields, including, Nikolaus Pevsner, Lise Meitner and Karl Popper. A number of Cara’s founders and Council members also personally provided places and/or funds to help individual academics; and Cara, known in the 1930s as the AAC, later the SPSL, was closely involved in the successful effort in 1933 to bring to London the Warburg Institute art library, which had been prohibited by the Nazis, and six of its staff. The Fellowship Programme is the continuation of the rescue mission operation started in 1933.

Cara has been a lifeline to academics at risk for just over 90 years, as and when world events have placed them in the line of fire: Hungarian Uprising, Cold War, Apartheid South Africa, Iran, Latin American Juntas, Vietnam, Kosovo, DRC, Rwanda, Sudan, Zimbabwe etc. and, more recently Iraq, Turkey, Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine. Cara support is typically framed as temporary sanctuary offered at times of heightened risk.

This is a critical time to join our dedicated and friendly Fellowship Programme team as we expand our capacity to support at-risk academics from the Middle East, Sudan, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Ukraine and Russia and many other countries.

 Fellowship Programme Officer Role & Responsibilities

Fellowships

• Lead on New Fellows Team cases and provide comprehensive support to Cara Fellows using trauma-informed practice.
• Secure fee waivers, bursaries & in-kind support from universities, research institutes and other funding bodies.
• Provide logistical support to Fellows prior to and after their arrival in the UK.
• Coordinate with regional exam centres to facilitate IELTS or equivalent fee waivers for Fellows.
• Collect and interpret regional intelligence to inform Fellowship Programme advice and guidance.
• Write and send official documents to Fellows.
• Develop relationships with universities and other partner organisations.
• Conduct due diligence on Fellows’ documents and risk.
• Assess Fellows’ suitability for academic placements and liaise with experts for their professional opinion.
• Assess Fellows’ English language abilities.
• Attend weekly meetings with the team.
• Support Fellowship Programme with ad hoc responsibilities.

Visa Advice & Guidance

• Liaise closely with Fellows and hosting universities on visa related issues (Student and Temporary Worker (GAE) visas).
• Liaise with independent legal advisors where necessary.
• Research and update visa guidance to reflect changes in complex immigration regulation.

Managerial Support

• Provide advice and guidance to Fellowship Programme Assistants
• Contribute to Fellowship Programme policy changes and decision-making.

Finance

• Make payments to Cara Fellows and non-Fellowship related payments.
• Document financial transaction records.
• Record all financial and in-kind support from universities and other partner institutions.

Monitoring and Evaluation

• Assist new arrivals with handover to the Active Fellows’ Team.
• Record and report on the efficacy of IELTS or equivalent fee waivers to relevant bodies.
• Assist with compilation of reports to funders.

Administration

• Provide support for general enquiries.
• Present and collect data
• Ensure safekeeping of confidential information
• Maintain detailed records of correspondence, documents, and activities.

Project Management

• The Programme Officer will have the opportunity to contribute to the management of internal projects within the Programme.

Responsibilities also include related activities that might arise in relation to the Fellowship Programme as required by the Executive Director or Deputy Director/Fellowship Programme Manager.

Job title: Regional Director, East and Southern Africa

Role Purpose:

Street Child is a rapidly growing, child-focused, humanitarian and development organisation. In 2023, Street Child celebrated reaching over one million children across 25 countries over its fifteen years of existence. This was accomplished with and through a growing network of more than 200 national and local actors. The Regional Director will be a standard bearer of this ambition in East and Southern Africa, providing leadership across all countries where Street Child is operational while monitoring and pursuing growth opportunities across the region. As Street Child’s most senior representative in the region, the Regional Director will guide and drive the organisation to deliver on the objective of ensuring all children are safe, in school, and learning.

As Street Child actively seeks opportunities to expand its support for the most marginalized girls and boys, the Regional Director will be responsible for providing outstanding leadership and for resourcing and delivering high impact programming across East and Southern Africa. The Regional Director will work to identify and advance partnerships with regional, national, and local actors, as well as donors. This will require bringing a strong network to the role along with energy to represent Street Child in organisational, regional, and global forums. As Street Child country teams drive delivery for girls and boys, the Regional Director will work with country directors to develop high-functioning teams to deliver and resource ambitious regional and country strategies.

The Regional Director will manage one regional programme coordinator and will progressively assume responsibility for line management of country directors in East and Southern Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

• The Regional Director will act as chief motivator, working collaboratively with country, regional, and head office teams to:
• Cultivate enthusiastic and high-performing teams through outstanding leadership:
• Build, lead and motivate an ambitious and enthusiastic team of Street Child Country Directors and Strategic Leadership Teams.
• Oversee and support the recruitment and development of passionate, motivated, and technically excellent Street Child staff.
• Strengthen Street Child’s culture of learning, for both staff and local partners, by identifying professional and organisational development opportunities that respond to self-identified capacity gaps.
• Build a supportive network of learning and information exchange between regional county teams.
• Be a frequent in-person presence in operational countries, sometimes spending extended periods to support leadership at the country level, including in insecure contexts.
• Oversee the management of partnerships in countries in East and Southern Africa where Street Child does not maintain a direct presence.
• Drive resource mobilization across the East and Southern Africa region, for country programmes, regional strategy, and partners:
• In close collaboration with country leadership, identify country-level needs, seek out opportunities, and support in the development of winning proposals for country programmes.
• Across the region, identify needs and gaps, and drive new potential expansion opportunities in line with Street Child’s global strategy.
• Guide programmatic excellence across the region through robust strategy development and high-quality programme delivery:
• Develop a technically robust and evidence-based regional strategy that identifies Street Child’s comparative value and strategic goals in the region, across humanitarian, development and refugee contexts.
• Continuously consult with Country Directors, programme managers and local partners to ensure programme design and delivery is iterative, adaptive and quality-assured and impact is clearly measured.
• Provide support to local partners to develop organisational development plans and their own high-functioning leadership structures.
• Oversee and work closely with the regional finance team in their development and delivery of accurate, value for money budgets and robust operational processes.
• Ensure that operations and programmes in East and Southern Africa are conducted in line with Street Child’s policies and standards, including in the areas of safeguarding, safety and security, HR, finance.

1) Be a passionate representative of Street Child and our partners, across the organisation and in external forums:

• Represent Street Child at the highest level in East and Southern Africa, including pro-active participation in relevant coordination mechanisms at national and regional level.
• Represent Street Child and the needs of children in East and Southern Africa in global for a as required.

2) Advance and diversify partnerships with the local actors who respond to the needs of girls and boys in their communities, and with donors who can resource the work:

• Lead the development of strategic partnerships with relevant actors including donors, INGOs and local/national government, including at the regional level.
• Oversee the development of a resource mobilisation strategy for the region based on Street Child’s expertise and donor priorities.
• Lead and/or support Country Directors in the development of high-quality and highly competitive institutional funding proposals.
• Proactive engagement with Street Child UK head office and programmes team on strategic, networking and fundraising activities.
• The Key Responsibilities provide a high-level view of the Regional Director role. These responsibilities will evolve as the Regional Director expands Street Child’s reach across East and Southern Africa. Street Child operates with an entrepreneurial spirit that may require staff to step-up and step-in to reasonable tasks beyond the initial description of their role. The Regional Director may occasionally be called upon to provide surge or scoping support to other parts of Street Child Programmes as delegated by the Director of Global Programmes.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Significant senior management experience, leading high-functioning programme regional or county teams in the humanitarian and development sector. Previous experience as a country or regional director is preferred.
• Strong strategic thinker, with demonstrated expertise developing, resourcing, and delivering strategic plans at the regional or country level.
• Demonstrable experience of proposal development and/or winning funding; Experience in both humanitarian and development contexts.
• Strong command of the localisation agenda, and commitment to local level leadership and decision-making.
• Strong experience delivering high quality education and/or child protection programming.
• Excellent written and spoken communications in English.
• Experience working in the East and Southern Africa region.
• Demonstrated experience working closely with and in support of a multitude of partners including those from local civil society, government, and the private sector.
• Excellent relationship building skills, with an ability to skillfully navigate both national and international stakeholders.
• Willingness to actively engage in program development with country teams including extended missions to support at country level (significant travel expected).
• Additional language skills with a preference for Swahili, Portuguese, French, Somali, or other regional language

About the team

Our Finance Department works as a team of experts to safeguard resources and support decision making across Shelter. We strive to ensure Shelter is financially sustainable in order to achieve our vision of a home for everyone. This particular role sits within the Financial Planning and Analysis team. We support the charity through financial reporting, analysis, and expert advice, and enable collaboration to support managers in making effective business decisions.

About the role

Joining a finance team that collaborates and communicates effectively to help us deliver our mission and vision, making vital business decisions that are driven by expert knowledge and financial acumen will be key to your success here. As part of the role, you’ll engage regularly with our Assistant Directors and their leadership teams to ensure that financial results and key messages are shared and you’ll support stakeholders in engaging with fully available financial insight and reporting.  When it comes to our stakeholders, you’ll support and lead finance education and training to equip them with the skills required to execute their own financial responsibilities.

Among your many challenges will be the need to align financial plans to operational and strategic plans and make sure they’re clearly understood by Business Units. Seeing that each Unit is provided with a channel of effective, two-way communication with Finance will be important too. You’ll also work with colleagues in Project Governance and HR Business Partnering to support Directorate planning and business cases, as well as supporting and leading on the delivery of cross-team projects.

About you

You’ll also need excellent organisational and time management skills, including the ability to work to deadlines and reprioritise tasks when necessary.

Excellent analytical skills, impeccable attention to detail, a high level of numeracy and intermediate Excel skills are all ‘must haves’ too, as is proficiency in the main Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook and Word. Additionally, it would be an advantage if you have experience working in a Charity and have associated experience of managing restricted funds and fundraising.
