Job description

Hope seeks an experienced administrator to support our legal work with homeless asylum seekers. Casework experience and OISC qualification a bonus. Excellent training provided.

Person Specification

Experience

1. Proven experience of working supportively with people under stress

2. Experience of working with groups of vulnerable / at risk people

3. Experience of giving advice to asylum seekers (desirable)

4. Experience of working with interpreters

Ability

5.Good listener

6. Excellent organisational abilities

7. Able to work sensitively within professional boundaries

8. Excellent written and spoken English

9. Ability to use common office IT software

10. Able to record data effectively

Knowledge

11. Understanding of issues affecting destitute asylum seekers

Qualities

12. Sympathy towards destitute asylum seekers

13. Good at communicating with colleagues and managers

14. Willing to work both from home and from Hope’s Birmingham office base

Qualifications

15. Qualified at OISC 1 or 2 (desirable)

 

Tasks

Under the supervision of the Head of Legal:

  1. Help clients obtain documents required prior to initial interviews including client care letters, interview records, refusal letters and judges determinations
  2. Interview clients face to face or via videocalls in order to help the head of legal understand why they have been refused and what steps can be taken to challenge this.
  3. Write up casenotes as required.
  4. Help the Senior Legal Officer to draft and finalise letter of advice and so access housing and support
  5. Write short, user friendly summaries of case and advice for clients
  6. Carry out follow up work including referrals to help clients access help including legal advice, housing and financial support.
  7. Meet with clients to explain why they have been refused and what steps they can take to challenge this where appropriate
  8. Work with interpreters to ensure clients able to fully understand all steps of the process
  9. Accurately record data as required
  10. Raise awareness of the service, including visiting drop ins or events when required
  11. Contribute to Hopes longitudinal study, annual evaluations and periodic reviews
  12. Engage with case reviews and other processes Hope may use to ensure quality of casework
  13. Contribute to Hopes ongoing development
  14. Engage with training including Continuous Professional Development where appropriate
  15. Contribute to Hopes work to raise awareness among policy makers, sector partners and the general public
  16. Work with Senior Legal Officer to maintain OISC registration where appropriate
  17. Cooperate with and support Hope Project’s other services
