Job description

5 billion people do not have access to safe, affordable surgical and anaesthesia care when needed. Can you help a growing organisation address a neglected area of global health care?

Surgery and anaesthesia have a fundamental impact on global health outcomes. Surgical intervention could address over 30% of the global burden of disease, and yet the poorest 33% of people receive just 3.5% of all surgery.

We seek to change this. However with the spread of coronavirus around the world, many of our sought after on-site programmes and courses in anaesthesia care have been suspended. While this has delayed our ability to provide face to face education and training where it is most needed, it also presents us with an exciting opportunity to explore alternative ways to deliver. This role will contribute to the WFSA’s vision and mission and build the overall capacity of the programmes team to increase our ability to provide digital education and training for anaesthesia providers around the world.

The role reports to the Head of Programmes, will liaise regularly with the CEO and will work closely with all members of the Secretariat as well as the WFSA’s Education and other Committees and key stakeholders involved in project outcomes. Relationships with member societies and the WFSA Board and Council will also be important and an ability to interact across a range of stakeholders is essential. This is a new role which offers huge scope for development and learning across a broad remit. The successful candidate will become part of a small WFSA Secretariat team based in London, the candidate must also be able to work from home as required. The Secretariat works with and supports a much larger team of volunteers around the world.

Purpose of the Role

With the input of the Education Committee in particular, the Programmes Team is responsible for the delivery and implementation of all aspects of training and education provided around the world by the WFSA. This role will lead on the design, development and roll-out of a high-quality digital learning experience in three initial stages:

  • Working with senior clinicians (training course leads) to transform pre-existing onsite training modules and short training courses into high-quality online products that can be effectively monitored and evaluated. This will result in developing new online training programmes as “stand-alone” courses as well as designing complements to onsite training courses (hybrid models).
  • Managing and evaluating existing online learning resources such as the WFSA’s Anaesthesia Tutorial of the Week, Update in Anaesthesia Journal, Virtual Library and COVID-19 Resources.
  • Working with WFSA Committees, our clinical volunteers and a variety of partners to establish and deliver new digital learning such as courses, webinars, educational videos and online lectures.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

You will lead on the design, development, maintenance and roll out of our online educational programmes using a range of e-Learning tools and platforms under the guidance of the Head of Programmes. Working alongside the Head of Programmes, WFSA Secretariat and expert volunteer clinicians, you will ensure that the WFSA’s digital education and training is appropriate to the needs of the intended audience, educationally robust, addresses equality, diversity and inclusion (relating to educational access by a range of learners), is evidence based, sustainable and positively impacts on practice.

As part of this role you will be responsible for supporting the WFSA’s Education Committee in identifying areas for improving education and training and propose innovative solutions for meeting current and future needs through the use of digital technology. You will provide expertise and input into the direction of WFSA’s overarching digital education strategy and lead on operational planning, development and delivery of digital education for WFSA, which includes fully online programmes, blended programmes and the general provision of digital resources.

IF YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR DIGITAL LEARNING THEN WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. PLEASE ALSO DEMONSTRATE HOW YOU MEET THE PERSON SPECIFICATION INCLUDING:

  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent)
  • Experience of developing digital learning and of delivering learning resources to a range of stakeholders
  • Experience in the operational and strategic delivery of digital education
  • Knowledge of pedagogical approaches and methods for designing and delivering online learning to adult learners (e.g. instructional design)
  • Proven experience of managing high volume workload and delivering to a consistently excellent standard under pressure
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and ability to lead and contribute to meetings with a wide range of stakeholders providing support and assistance as and when required
  • Good project management skills
  • Experience of working collaboratively with colleagues to review and improve the quality of online learning content

(See the job description for more details)

If this sounds like you then we would be delighted to receive your application. Please include a CV and a covering letter with your application by the deadline of the 30th of September. Applications that do not include a covering letter will not be considered.

Interviews will take place in London (or online) on the 7th or 8th of October.
