Role Purpose
To fulfil its Programme Strategy 2022-2027, ShelterBox’s programming will be guided by two Shelter Technical leads, one with a greater focus on emergency response and one with a greater focus on transitional and durable shelters and WASH. The two positions - working in close coordination and collaboration - will collaborate with the Programme Quality and Programme Delivery teams, to maximise the quality of ShelterBox’s programming in alignment with our renewed mission, vision, and strategy, under the leadership of the Head of Programme Quality.
Duties will include but not be limited to:
- Provide technical input into shelter and WASH project design and development, ensuring that shelter technical standards are documented in project sheltering strategies and tools, and that these standards are adhered to throughout the project cycle.
- Continually assess ShelterBox’s technical strengths and areas for improvement, identify approaches to addressing areas for improvement and work with relevant colleagues to put these into action.
- Provide technical advice and assistance to needs assessment, project design and delivery, including through participating in project design, reviewing concept notes/proposals and presence in-country where this is necessary to support the quality of high priority activities.
- Support partners technical shelter knowledge and capacity development, ensuring that their activities are aligned with organisational and global humanitarian standards.
- Ensure that shelter projects consider priority cross-cutting issues such as, environment, housing land and property rights, protection, gender and inclusion, and safety; and that site activities comply with appropriate local, national, and international standards and regulations.
- Support to market assessments to identify existing capacities and resources that can be leveraged to support self-recovery in shelter programming.
- Provide technical support and advice to emergency preparedness planning.
- Work with Heads of Department in International Programmes to identify technical capacity building/training needs of programme staff and ShelterBox Response Team volunteers, and work with the Learning & Development team to develop approaches to meeting these needs.
- Support the Programme Delivery team (Emergencies and Regional Programmes) to assess technical capacity of partners. Develop and deliver and/or facilitate access to shelter and WASH technical capacity building opportunities for our partners as appropriate and work with the Learning & Development team to develop approaches to meeting training needs.
- Represent ShelterBox in the Global Shelter Cluster and other relevant global shelter technical fora, networks, and coordination mechanisms. Facilitate participation of other representatives of ShelterBox in technical/sector fora as appropriate.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with technical shelter leads in peer organisations.
- Act as technical focal point for existing strategic global/regional partnerships and support the Director and Deputy Director of International Programmes and the Partnerships Manager to build and maintain new strategic relationships with other shelter actors (not including Rotary).
- Engage with sector networks and resources to maintain relationships and awareness of sector trends, learning and recommended practice. Identify potential opportunities and significant improvements in the way we work.
- Proactively analyse and make recommendations on how emerging global and sector trends, developments and research might potentially affect current policy and practices.
- Support development of a Research Strategy and ensure accompanying work plans to make the most of opportunity for improvement, innovation, and development. Include consideration of aid items, approaches, and agreed organisational learnings.
- Build links and collaborate with relevant sector organisations, communities of practice and academic institutions to build strategically appropriate research agenda.
- Engage professional partners (organisations, individuals, and communities of practice) to both obtain and cascade learning opportunities.
- Promote and actively support an organisational learning culture. Communicate knowledge and learning related to product, process, and approach. Work with the Impact & Accountability Lead to ensure that ShelterBox has robust systems in place for technical knowledge management and knowledge sharing. Ensure relevant programme and wider staff are aware of key sector trends and recommended practice as appropriate.
- Work in collaboration with the Sustainability Manager to ensure that project design and implementation considers sustainability, including, but not limited to, utilising local resources where this makes sense and in reducing plastic and emissions in our programming.
- Work in collaboration with Sustainability Manager and Supply Chain to research, test, develop and implement more sustainable alternatives to our shelter offering.
- Support the development of a research strategy and ensure accompanying work plans to make the most of opportunity for improvement, innovation, and development. Include consideration of aid items, approaches, and agreed organisational learnings.
- Accurately and accessibly present ideas, findings, recommendations, and changes as appropriate to the audience to support organisational awareness, decision making, sector voice, and income generation.
- Work away from home, this may be UK or overseas training or deployment to disaster affected areas. Whilst you are unlikely to respond for more than six weeks at any one time, you may be required to deploy for up to 40% of your time in any calendar year.

About the Team
This role sits within the Business Enablement team within Shelter’s Technology & Data (T&D) Department, which is made up of 30+ people based across the country with bases in London, Sheffield, and Edinburgh.
The T&D Department is accountable for developing and leading Shelter’s technology and data strategic priorities, providing a secure infrastructure, management of data and insight to underpin strategic outcomes, delivery of technology change projects, data governance and the provision of support for a range of software, systems, and platform tools.

Fantastic opportunity to work in a small friendly team. As Project Lead for APAP's Night Shelter provision you will be responsible for a caseload of clients and the wider management of the Night Shelter project. You will work with clients from assessment, through to placement in our provision and then support them to move beyond homelessness.
We work in partnership to provide single room, 24 hour staffed accommodation to clients in our provision. You will take a lead on maintaining a relationship with the accommodation provider through regular liaison and communication. You will also lead on all casework in relation to our clients, assessing their needs and supporting them to attend and engage with the services they need to move through and beyond homelessness.
Working predominantly with clients that have No Recourse to Public Funds, our Night Shelter Provision provides respite from the streets and an opportunity to work across agencies to address issues including immigration, mental and physical health and substance misuse.

About the team
Sitting under the Communications and Engagement team at Shelter Scotland, our tight-knit team comprises of a Supporter Mobilisation Manager, a Senior Marketing and Brand Executive, a Marketing Executive as well as a Supporter Engagement Executive (this role). As a team, we work to deliver on Shelter Scotland’s ambitious strategy by leading our activities that help driver engagement both on a local and national scale.

About the role
Working as a Supporter Engagement Executive, you will use your expertise to coordinate and deliver projects that are driving engagement with our key audiences. You will ensure that we have a mass of people who can provide their voices in support of the work we do, as well as encouraging new and existing supporters to have a voice.
As an experienced Supporter Engagement Executive, you’ll be working with our Income Generation teams to support with fundraising and awareness projects to maximise our impact with Scottish audiences. Not only helping us to ensure that Shelter Scotland can deliver on its supporter strategy, you will use mass-mobilisation to achieve supporter growth which will help us to win our campaigns and achieve long-term change.
Your day to day role will involve working with the Supporter Mobilisation Manager to develop and test new supporter propositions and strategies, as well as producing powerful and engaging approaches and materials that align with our Shelter Scotland brand.
This role is vital in helping us to build strong supporter relationships and create long-term commitment to the work Shelter Scotland does and allow us to continue our fight.
About you
You’ll need to be confident on working on ambitious multi-channel awareness or fundraising campaigns that can drive supporter acquisition or retention, as well as being able to inspire and motivate our supporters to take action. As well as having excellent communication skills, you’ll be a data-driven individual who is able and confident to assess the impact of work while adopting a test and learn approach. What’s more, you’ll be knowledgeable on integrated channel planning as well as have a familiarity with paid media, including display, PPC, SEO and social media advertising. Ideally, you’ll also have experience of using CRM Systems, Google Analytics, and email marketing software as well as knowledge of digital fundraising platforms.

The team deliver a range of services, including training on housing and homelessness prevention, housing law consultancy, online resources and projects to support professionals working directly with people at risk of homelessness to get positive outcomes. The team covers all of England and works closely with teams including Learning and Organisational Development, Training and Support, Business Support, as well as our frontline Services and Legal Services.

Knowledge is power and we run over 1,600 training courses that attract 40,000 delegates each year. Your challenge, together with three other Operations Assistants will be to take responsibility for the administration and operational delivery of all of our courses, including face-to-face training and online via webinars and e-learning. We’ll rely on you to ensure that each course runs smoothly, all delegates and trainers have the instructions and information they need and that the highest level of customer care is provided. About the role and team
Working within the wider Supporter Acquisition and Retention teams, you will play a crucial role in creating engaging onboarding journeys for Shelter supporters, ensuring engagement is high throughout. You’ll be responsible for leading the strategic direction of the Individual Giving programme, making data-informed decisions to deliver outstanding supporter experiences.
Leading the team, and matrix managing other pipelines of work, you will be supported by the Head of Supporter Acquisition to deliver multiple projects concurrently. This role is crucial within the team, allowing the team to provide £20m of unrestricted income across Supporter Acquisition, Supporter Retention & Development, and Direct Dialogue.
About you
You will be an experienced Fundraiser, or have worked in a direct marketing environment, and be audience led and supporter centric.
You will also have:
- An understanding of how to develop engaging supporter journeys from point of recruitment
- Strong people skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and with flexibility
- Effective project and campaign management skills, with experience of managing multiple projects or campaigns at once

The Policy and Public Affairs Manager leads a team of 3.9FTEs working on policy, research, public affairs and public campaigning. Everyone in Shelter Cymru is in the business of preventing homelessness, and you will be doing this by overseeing the policy and campaigning process to help us deliver positive change that makes an impact on the lives of the people we serve. If you are think you are up to this challenge, this may be the job for you.
The post’s location is flexible. The Campaigns team has adopted a hybrid working pattern, being based part of the week in one of Shelter Cymru’s offices around Wales.

About the team
Sitting under our Finance Team, we work collaboratively to help safeguard our resources across Shelter to ensure the organisation is financially stable. Our finance teams all work together to help support Shelter’s aim to achieve a home for everyone.
This Accounts Payable team plays a crucial role within Finance – working to pay suppliers in a timely manner allowing Shelter to continue it’s vital work. We also lead on controls to help ensure that donors’ money is being spent in the best way we can. You’ll be working in a tight-knit team alongside two Accounts Payable Coordinators, an Accounts Payable Manager, a Head of Financial Control and Operations – all of which fall under our Assistant Director of Finance.
About the role
Your role will involve ensuring all invoices are properly posted to Shelter’s finance system, as well as matching to correct purchase orders within required timescales. You’ll also be processing our staff expenses as well as credit card expenses to ensure that we pay these within our agreed timescales.
Part of your day-to-day tasks will also involve being the key point of contact through our Accounts Payable Inbox – and at times we’ll rely on you to provide training to Shelter colleagues on our purchase-to-pay cycle as well as providing guidance for raising purchase requisition requests. You’ll be an integral part of our team to ensure our operations run smoothly helping us to deliver within our deadlines.

About the Team
The Outbound Supporter Services team is based in Sheffield, in the same office as our free national housing advice helpline. The team does vital work engaging new and existing supporters, educating them on Shelter’s fight against social injustice. The team is responsible for promoting Shelter’s work, raising awareness of housing and homelessness issues, and enhancing the organisation’s ability to both recruit and retain supporters.
About the role
You will be the first point of contact for many supporters seeking information about Shelter’s work; you will have excellent communication and administrative skills and a real interest in housing issues, as well as an understanding of how the Outbound Supporter Services Team impacts supporter retention. Your tasks will include calling supporters to welcome them to the organization, thanking them for choosing to support us, undertaking quality control surveys and ensuring the accuracy of supporter data.
As a Tele-Fundraising Intern, you will promote Shelter, raise awareness of housing and homelessness issues and enhance Shelter’s ability to retain our supporters. This is a diverse role and you will be expected to respond to enquiries about Shelter’s work and action supporter requests. You will maintain accurate supporter records and liaise with other departments to ensure this happens. You will also be required to handle complaints about services and fundraising activity.

This role sits within our Mass Participation team, which supports participants in challenge events organised by third parties (e.g., the London Marathon) and bespoke Shelter events (e.g., Walk for Home, Facebook Challenge).
We’re part of Community and Events, which in turn is part of a wider department - the Income Generation directorate - which focuses on a variety of types of fundraising. This Co-ordinator role sits in the Mass Participation team. We support participants in mass participation challenge events - both those organised by third parties (e.g. London Marathon) and bespoke Shelter events that we develop (e.g. Walk for Home, Facebook Challenge).
Across the charity sector, fundraising through challenge events was hugely impacted over the last three years because of Covid-19 and the cost-of-living crisis. At Shelter, we’ve consolidated our events offering to supporters and are investing in growing our portfolio, aiming to achieve growth in the coming years across challenge and bespoke events.
We’ve seen an increase in participation levels and income from third party events over the last 18 months, with sell out teams of up to 400 runners in our events. We are ambitious and seek to significantly grow our income and supporter numbers and are looking for someone who can join us to be part of the team that makes that happen. This is a great opportunity for someone with experience in working in a charity, fundraising or events environment to learn more about community and events, take on the responsibility of overseeing and implementing events with the support of the Senior Mass Participation Manager, and develop a career in fundraising.
The main objective of the Co-ordinator role will be to deliver challenge and bespoke events, from planning and set up, pulling together financial budgets to meeting supporter recruitment and income targets through to the delivery of event day and evaluating results.
This role will primarily focus on delivering our participation in third party events (including the London Landmarks Half Marathon, the Great North Run and the Hackney Half Marathon). There will be opportunities to broaden experience and support the wider Community & Events team during busy times, and coordinators are expected to be flexible and work across the wider mass participation portfolio when required.
About you
Someone who enjoys collaborating and communicating with a variety of people, whether face-to-face, over the phone, by email, letter or via social media channels, you have great attention to detail and a proactive approach to everything you do. If you’ve got experience of managing challenge events for charities or stewarding large volumes (200+) supporters that would be a bonus but is not essential. A basic knowledge of budgeting (for which support will be provided) would also help you quickly gain confidence in the role. Equally important is a positive attitude to learning, a flexible approach and excellent time management skills, along with a willingness to be busy each day and enjoy the variety that brings.

The Income Generation Directorate at Shelter comprises of 5 departments, delivering a mature fundraising programme that has seen continuous year on year diversity and growth. The directorate generates over £48m gross income each year, of which a high percentage is unrestricted. Our Corporate Partnerships team is split into two areas - New Partnerships which generates income by securing new relationships with private sector businesses, and the Partnership Management team, where this role sits, is responsible for the growth of Shelter’s voluntary income by managing and developing existing corporate partnerships spanning a variety of sectors. This is an essential and valued role within the Partnership Management team, as you will help design and deliver impactful partnerships to generate income to fund our vital work in response to the national housing emergency. You will also lead on the success and development of a dedicated portfolio of partners, delivering colleague and customer facing fundraising and commercial campaigns to a high quality.
