Job description

This role is partly based at home, partly in the Northbank offices in Sheffield. Applicants must be willing and able to work from both locations as required.

Closing date: 8th July 2021 at 11.30pm.

Would you like to help our clients understand and enforce their rights? Do you have experience of delivering debt advice and casework services to a specialist level? Then join Shelter’s telephone casework service as a Telephone and Online Advice Services Adviser and help us to expand the service we’re able to offer to our clients in need of debt advice. The role will involve also giving housing and welfare benefits advice, don’t worry if you don’t have experience in these areas as Shelter will provide full training and support.

Office hours are Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm and you’ll be able to work flexibly within these times. The posts are based at our offices in Sheffield. Successful applicants will be required to work both from these offices and from home as and when required.

About the Role
Day-to-day you will be working on Shelter’s Helpline Plus telephone casework service, providing legal advice and assistance to members of the public who are a facing a housing or homelessness problem. We empower you to use your initiative to do whatever you can to support and resolve your client’s issues.

This is a challenging, diverse and rewarding role with an opportunity to use a variety of skills that will see you make a real difference to people’s lives. 

About you

  • You will have the ability to communicate complex legal information clearly both verbally and in writing
  • You will have the confidence to challenge external organisations and individuals to enforce your clients’ rights
  • You will have experience of delivering debt advice at a specialist level, experience in housing and welfare benefits would be an advantage.
  • You will have the emotional resilience to be able to deal effectively with clients who are distressed, experiencing trauma and people at risk of harm.
  • You will have experience of using a range of IT tools to carry out your work, including Microsoft Office applications, internet and email etc. Good typing skills are essential.
