Job description

Head of Philanthropy and Development

The Good Food Institute Europe

Helping people, animals, and the planet by raising money for a new organisation in Europe to promote plant-based and cultivated meat

Industrial animal agriculture is at the root of many of the most pressing global issues of our time, from climate change and global hunger to antibiotic resistance and the exploitation of billions of animals annually.

The Good Food Institute (GFI) is at the forefront of the movement to use food technology and markets to replace the products of industrial animal agriculture with plant-based and cultivated alternatives.

We are just getting started in Europe and are looking for a Head of Philanthropy and Development to lead the design and execution of a fundraising strategy to enable us to do our vital work.

How You Will Make a Difference

Your role will have high responsibility and high impact. Reporting directly to the Managing Director of GFI Europe, you will be in charge of fundraising to allow us to do our vital work. Your performance in this role has the potential to make a significant impact on how quickly Europe and the world moves to a more ethical and sustainable food system.

Alongside the Head of Philanthropy and Development, we are also recruiting for a Head of Operations. Together with the Managing Director, you will form the nucleus of our new organisation and help to drive concrete change in the European and global food system. We will start off as a small team, and plan to grow in future.

As Head of Philanthropy and Development, you will be responsible for:

  • Creating and delivering a fundraising strategy for GFI Europe, focussed initially on major donors.
  • Establishing and leading the entire development department of GFI Europe from scratch.
  • Building strong, meaningful, long-term relationships with major donors and prospects, working closely with the Managing Director to maintain and expand their support.
  • Identifying and qualifying new philanthropic prospects.
  • Building a system to manage prospects and supporters.
  • Managing gift processing workflow: processing all incoming donations and generating all gift-related correspondence, including documenting and ensuring detailed and accurate gift tracking, allocation, and timely acknowledgment. Establishing and maintaining a donor database.
  • Over time, identifying and implementing other fundraising revenue streams, including Foundations, and developing and executing creative strategies to expand our donor base, for example using social media, e-appeals, etc.
  • Helping keep our supporters up to date with our activities and impact.
  • Setting and exceeding fundraising targets.
  • Coordinating closely with GFI development colleagues in the US and other countries.
  • Working with major donors across Europe, with an initial focus on the UK.
  • Over time, helping to drive GFI’s expansion to other countries in Europe, including setting up development systems in those countries.
  • Helping to organise transnational giving across national boundaries.
  • Potentially manage volunteers who wish to support GFI Europe’s development function.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Managing Director. As we are a start-up, you will be expected to help with a wide range of different functions on an ad hoc basis.

Who We’re Looking For

The Head of Philanthropy and Development must have:

  • A passion for our philosophy and mission.
  • A commitment to helping build GFI Europe as a successful organisation for the long term.
  • A proven track record of cultivating relationships with individuals and families with leadership giving potential and securing major gifts.
  • A genuine love of working with other people and a passion for building warm, long-lasting relationships with our family of supporters, motivating them to maintain and increase their support.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience in fundraising or donor relations.
  • Comfort working in a new, small, growing and evolving organization.
  • A willingness to travel throughout Europe in pursuit of philanthropic opportunities.
  • A willingness to undertake evening and weekend work as required.
  • A very strong work ethic and self-motivation; a sense of ownership and responsibility to drive outcomes.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • A positive, can-do, hands-on attitude. You must be willing to help with a range of tasks, some of which may be unrelated to your core tasks.
  • An interest in the alternative protein movement, and a willingness to learn more.

The ideal candidate would also have:

  • Experiencing in securing grants from foundations, including crafting and presenting creative funding proposals.
  • Extensive relationships with prospective supporters of GFI Europe, whether individuals or institutions.
  • Experience successfully building a new development system from scratch.
  • Experience as a successful fundraiser in a start-up environment.
  • Experience successfully setting up and running a new UK charity.
  • Proficiency in one or more major EU language other than English.
  • Experience managing a team.

We want the best people and we don’t want biases holding us back. We strongly encourage people of every race, orientation, age, gender, origin, and ability to apply. Because we value a diverse workplace, we prioritize an inclusive climate absent of discrimination and harassment during the application process and after you join the team.

The Fine Print

  • Terms of employment: Full-time
  • Reports to: Richard Parr MBE, Managing Director of GFI Europe
  • Location: Flexible - we will consider applicants from across Europe. Day-to-day, you will mainly be working remotely: from your home, or wherever you choose. You will be expected to have regular face-to-face meetings with supporters and prospects. We will get together in London fairly often for co-working, so you must be willing and able to travel to London frequently (at least once a month, for at least a week at a time). You will also be expected to travel frequently to major European cities to meet supporters and prospects. We are only able to consider applicants who are eligible to work in the EU or UK.
  • Salary: Up to £50,000 per year. This figure is based on a hire in London, and will be adjusted to reflect the local cost of living for hires made elsewhere.
  • Application Deadline: 15th November. We will be assessing candidates on a rolling basis, so please apply now!
  • Application process: Please *both* send your CV and a cover letter, as email attachments, to europe "at" gfi "dot" org *and* complete this short form: forms.gle/QygY4rLf1DyWBoAr9 (just paste this address into your web browser) - thank you. Your cover letter should concisely explain what motivated you to apply for this role, why you think you’d be a great fit, and which bit of the job description energises you the most. Please also mention how you heard about this role. We really look forward to hearing from you!
  • Any questions? Please reach out to europe "at" gfi "dot" org. If you’ve read this far but decided not to apply, please feel free to share this job description with someone else in your network who you think might be a good fit for the role! Thank you.
