Job description

The Job Context

We are looking for an exceptional Head of Communications, Marketing & PR who will work directly with the CEO and COO as a key member of the senior management team. The post holder will be build and develop a small team and take lead responsibility for design and implementation of the marketing and communication strategy.

Since the formation of the charity in 2007, Best Beginnings has developed and implemented a wide range of highly regarded services. These form the core of our offer to parents and professionals and continue to be accessed across the UK. We are an ambitious charity and are pursuing a strategy for growth to ensure that our services have the maximum reach and positive impact where help is most needed.

Key Responsibilities: 

  1. Develop and implement a marketing and communication strategy for the organisation, in collaboration with Senior Management.
  2. Lead strategic communications to drive the impact of our campaigns and messaging, grow our profile and increase our influence.
  3. Take responsibility for our overall communications strategy and planning all our digital activities and the leadership of our brand.
  4. Develop and execute the delivery of presentations, videos, content and infographics in line with current projects.
  5. Lead and develop a small team to ensure all details are covered and that there is complete consistency and polish across all comms & marketing streams from the bottom up.
  6. Provide leadership and direction across member and volunteer engagement, ensuring good collaboration and consistent messaging.
  7. Manage the relationship with outsourced PR company and ensure they are fully briefed and aligned with the organisational goals and message.
  8. Bring innovation and best practice to your role, blending creative thinking with organisational operations and strategy.
  9. Optimise process within the wider marketing team, evaluate and implement new tools to drive efficiencies and maximise returns on campaigns.
  10. Bring digital product marketing experience to the team to ensure the app and technical team are supported in their communications and delivery.
  11. Work closely with the CEO and COO to raise the profile of the team via thought leadership opportunities, keynote speeches, awards, events, articles etc

Person Specification:

  • Skills:
    • ​A strong track record in leading and managing a marketing and communications team, preferably in a charitable organisation.
    • A minimum of a degree level or equivalent qualification in marketing/ communications.
    • An ability to manage staff within a context of number of competing, and sometimes very urgent priorities/ demands.
    • Highly developed written and oral communication skills, and an ability to identify, distil and convey key messages in a succinct manner.
    • A proven track record in establishing positive relationships with people (internal and external) at various levels, including key stakeholders.
    • High level of creativity in ideas generation and be able to solve problems.
    • A high degree of professionalism, business understanding, integrity and credibility.
    • Sound computing skills, including use of Microsoft Office applications. Awareness of specialist software, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite.
    • Strong digital product and marketing knowledge and skills.
    • Excellent inter-personal and negotiating skills.
    • Excellent attention to details.
    • Highly organized, with good time management skills.
  • Knowledge:
    • Understanding of the strategic and operational context for a UK charity.
    • Understanding of digital media platforms and the way in which digital media can be used to deliver strategic and operational priorities.
    • Principles and practice of operational and project management.
    • An understanding of the early years/maternity sector.
  • Experience:
    • Proven experience of working with a range of stakeholders including communities, health professionals and voluntary sector partners.
    • Minimum of 2 years working in a senior management role within a charitable or similar setting.
