The Men in Sheds Project: Is a project specifically for men aged 50+. It provides a well equipped workshop space where men can work together on a range of practical activities. We currently have ‘sheds’ in Blidworth, Nottingham, Daybrook and Worksop. The project aims to:
- encourage men to be more socially active
- give members an outlet for their skills and the opportunity to learn new skills
- provide a break amongst friends for older men who are carers
- give retired men the opportunity to make a valuable contribution to the local community
- provide access to information and other local services Members are encouraged to take ownership of their ’shed’.
What impact does this role have? This role helps combat social isolation for men over the age of 50.
What activities might you be involved in?
• To unlock the shed and get it ready for use, heating, check for unsafe items of machines etc.
• Supervising workshop sessions, alongside another volunteer.
• Collect or oversee the payment of subscriptions, ensure that members book in on the attendance register
• Assist members if needed with projects, lifting etc.
• Agree with members in advance on the price of projects that members make
• Take payment for items when finished, issue a receipt and record the sale
• Encourage work that could be done to members, orders, seasonal items etc.
• Meet and greet visitors, ensure they comply with all safety requirements and to sign in
• Meet and greet potential new members, show them around the shed and briefly describe the aims and function of the shed. Arrange a meeting with a shed leader for induction if interested. Ensure they comply with all safety requirements and to sign in
• (With one other Volunteer or member) Count and record subscriptions & tea fund at the end of the day and put away in the safe
• You will be supported by a staff member from the Men in Sheds Team
• To check that everything is switched off, the ‘Red Button’ is pressed and to lock up at the end of the day
• Reporting any concerns to the Shed leader
What are we looking for?
➢ Friendly personality and approachable manner
➢ Ability to use own initiative to work alone, or as part of a team
➢ Understanding of the workshop environment and/ or working with power tools
➢ Appreciation of the need to follow health and safety guidelines
o Ensure members follow the shed’s General Safety Rules
o Ensure that all members work in a safe manner
o Ensure machines are not used inappropriately
o Ensure members wear the correct PPE equipment as per the H&S notices,
o To wear PPE equipment yourself, if you don’t use PPE and injure yourself, you could be negligent, the shed will not accept any responsibility for your injury. This should also be pointed out to members
o Ensure there is no smoking in the shed, only in the outside designated smoking area
o Stop other members from carrying out unsafe practices or report it to a Shed Leader immediately
o Actively contribute to keeping the shed clean and tidy
➢ Expected levels of conduct include:
o Treat members and fellow volunteers in a friendly and supportive approachable manner
o Not use rude, offensive, threatening or abusive behaviour, language or gestures
o If anybody is deemed under the influence they will be asked to leave the shed and not to return until sober
o Report any incidents or breach of any of the above to the Shed Leader in confidence
o Report any complaints about the project / charity in line with Age UK Notts’ Compliments and Complaints procedure
➢ Be able to cover a session either weekly or to provide cover on an ‘as needed’ basis.
Ability to work sensitively and confidentially with men from a variety of backgrounds.
➢ Willingness to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service check.
We are looking for volunteers who can regularly commit to at least one session per week.
- The Daybrook Shed: Open Monday – Thursday, 9.00am – 12.00pm and 12.30pm - 3:30pm, and we are looking for volunteers on all days but particularly on a Thursday.
- The Worksop Shed: Open Monday - Wednesday: 9am - 2pm and we are looking for volunteers on all days.
- The Blidworth Shed: Open Tuesday 9am - 2pm & Thursday 9am - 1pm and will soon be opening on a Wednesday (9am until 2pm), and we are looking for volunteers on a Wednesday and a Thursday.
Days to be agreed with the shed.
Please note that this volunteer role is aimed at the older male population who attends the shed and applicants must have been a member of the shed for at least 3 months.

Men Who Talk is a UK registered charity, running twice monthly online peer-to-peer support groups for men aged 18+ across the UK. The groups take places between 7:00 - 8:30pm during week nights.
Our groups are supportive spaces for men aged 18+ to come and talk openly about what's on their mind. All groups are free to attend and follow the evidence based model of peer support.
Volunteers are required to be online from 6:45pm to 8:45pm, and are required to facilitate around 1 group per month. Volunteers are asked to commit to an a minimum of 6 months of volunteering in the initial stage.
All groups are facilitated by 2 facilitators, and follow a semi-structured pattern.
We are looking for passionate men with some experience of groups facilitating or working in mental health settings to come join us as facilitators. Experience in using online platforms such as zoom is essential.
A degree in psychology is preferred but not an essential requirement.

The impact of sexual violence of any form, whether experienced as an adult or as a child, can be devastating and can last a lifetime. We aim to raise awareness of the support survivors need and the work of our Member Agencies in providing this crucial help.
TST is in the unique position of having member agencies that are working with all victims and survivors of sexual violence and sexual abuse. We are well aware of the issues facing organisations that are delivering trauma informed services and can support them and policy makers and commissioners to understand how services need to be developed and provided. TST is an independent inspection body for our UKAS accredited service standards for specialist sexual violence organisations.
We provide an accredited Diploma for Independent Sexual Violence Advisors (ISVAs) and CPD accredited workshops. We have also established a quality mark for educational establishments and corporate organisations, our Trauma Informed Educator and Trauma Informed Employer Quality Marks (TIE).
The right candidate will need to make a pesonal commitment to our work and to support our vision and values with compassion and empathy. The Men’s Health Telephone Group is a chance for blind and partially sighted men to come together and discuss any aspects of men’s health over the telephone once a month. This group is for men to share experiences of any aspect of men’s health including sexual health, contraception, etc. However, the group is not for the sharing of medical advice. You should be someone who is comfortable listening to conversations about men’s health that may include talk of a sexual or personal nature. You will be: Helping to ensure participants feel comfortable and to facilitate discussion. Helping the group participants feel safe to be in the group and to enable them to join in the group discussion month. Looking after participant welfare within the group and flagging any welfare or safeguarding concerns to Talk and Support for follow up. We help all wounded servicemen and women who have lost limbs, the use of limbs or eyes, to rebuild their lives by providing rehabilitation activities and welfare support.
We are looking for Volunteers to help the Fundraising Team at in person fundraising and awareness raising events throughout the UK. We’re a small and friendly team, operating at a regional and national level. We organise Blesma events and collections, attend third party events and support fundraisers doing their own events.
By volunteering with us, you will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of volunteering for a charity and will contribute to our work supporting injured veterans and their families.

Clinical staff in our hospices provide a range of activities for patients and their families, which would not be possible without the support of our volunteers. We are looking for Activities Coordinators to help support clinical staff in the hospice by providing a welcoming and safe environment for men affected by terminal illness and by coordinating activity sessions.
What we need you to do
Your role will include some of, but is not restricted to, the following tasks:
- Provide a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere which is appropriate for activities
- Welcome and chat to patients, carers and widowers
- Plan and deliver a programme of sessions for Men's Shed attendees for the group you are leading
- Promote the Men's Shed within the hospice and the local community
- Identify equipment and material needs for activities and discuss with volunteer line manager
- Help with other related tasks as necessary

We are looking for a friendly face to help staff the Yeldall Manor reception desk for a few hours each week.
The role entails being the first point of contact for telephone callers, visitors and residents, welcoming and redirecting their queries/calls as appropriate. You will be comfortable using a computer in order to send emails, access the diary and assist with basic admin tasks, although there may also be times with less to do.
The role includes a lot of client contact, so you will have daily contact with those men whom you are helping. They inspire and motivate us just as much as we seek to encourage and support them. As part of this, we ask that all our staff and volunteers help support the residents by interacting with them and encouraging them in their recovery and spiritual growth, and so ask that you will have a committed Christian faith yourself.
Yeldall Manor is set in the Berkshire countryside, about three miles from Twyford station. Lunch is provided with fellow staff and resident.

Home-Start Portsmouth is looking for a new Chairperson to lead our Board of Trustees and contribute to the development and success of the charity.
Home-Start Portsmouth supports families with young children through their most challenging times. Our vision is a world where no parent feels alone in the critical task of raising children.
The charity is part of the Home-Start UK federation of more than 80 Home-Starts.
Through our expert staff team and local community of more than 100 trained volunteers, we offer practical and emotional support to parents and families by spending time in their homes, running parenting programmes and offering stay and play groups, and school-readiness programmes in the community.
In 2022-23, we supported 1,394 families through projects and community groups, and 788 children. Our volunteers delivered almost 17,000 hours of support to families.
It's an exciting time to join the charity as, this year, we are on target to triple income, have doubled the staff team and are offering services to many more families in the city.
The role
We are looking for a strong and passionate Chair to lead and enable the Board of Trustees at Home-Start Portsmouth (made up of eight Trustees and CEO).
You will support us in developing and delivering a focused and robust rolling three-year business plan, to deliver on all governance requirements, and to be a highly visible member of the community.

Trailblazers has been providing mentoring services to people in prison since 1998 with ultimate aim to to reduce re-offending. We provide support to men between the age of 18 - 35 that have 6 months left of their prison sentence and through gate into their own community for a maximum of 12 months. Services are delivered in Wolverhampton in HMPYOI Brinsford, HMP Featherstone. In London HMP Brixton and HMPYOI Isis. We are looking for volunteer mentors in all priosn porjects that can spare half a day per week to support men to change their life through inspirational role models and goal setting. Mentoring sessions usually last 1 hour per week, to allow enough time for travel and liasing with Trailblazers staff this will take about half of your day. We are actively looking for people to join our mentoring community with lived experience of the criminal justice system, under represented groups from BAME community, creative arts, business skills, wellbeing - whatever your skills and background we are open to hear from you to support our diverse group of men.Out of pocket expenses are covered as well as training to equip you for your role. • To be an advocate for a mentee and to actively seek opportunities for mentees for resettlement back into their own community in conjunction with Trailblazers staff
• To be non-judgmental, focus on the person rather than the offense
• Professional but relatable with strong communication skills
• Awareness of adversity and how to overcome barriers to build a supportive network around the mentee
• Basic IT skills
• Be able to take advice and guidance from Trailblazers staff
Criteria
• Over 21
• We encourage applications from those with lived experience of the Criminal Justice System but you must be off licence for a minimum of 12 months, and not in crisis yourself
• You cannot apply to a project if you have been a resident in the same prison yourself
• A good level of fitness to able to move around a prison at fast past that does include stairs
• Due to security checks at the prison you must be a British citizen
• Not committed an offense where you are barred from working with vulnerable adults or children
• Live within a 30 mile radius from the prison you would like to volunteer at
