What you will be doing.
As a Maintenance Volunteer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining our facilities and creating a supportive environment for our clients. Your duties will include fixing furniture and equipment, installing new fixtures and appliances, assembling furniture, handling basic plumbing tasks, and undertaking repair jobs such as painting, decorating, carpentry, and basic electrics. You will also assist in creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for our clients, ensuring their safety and security. By volunteering your skills and expertise, you will become an integral part of our mission to improve the lives of children in need.

What is a Knowledge Leader?
The role of a Knowledge Leader is to inspire the curiosity of young peopl in science, media and the environment throughout the expeditition. Our leaders give young people the tools to explore their curiosity through the development of skills and practical techniques. To achieve this, it is the responsibility of the Senior Knowledge Leader, Knowledge Leaders and the collaboration of all leaders to design and deliver a programme of inspirational, educational projects.
We are looking for applicants who are:
- Able and passionate about leading, inspiring, and facilitating sessions with young people.
- Comfortable spending extended periods in remote and sometimes harsh environments.
- Able to commit to all pre-expedition training events.
- Available for expeditions for 2 to 6 weeks from mid July.
As a charity, all Leader positions are undertaken on a voluntary basis and Leaders join for the intrinsic value of adventure, education, and personal development of young people. You do not have to fundraise to lead on our expeditions.
Benefits of being a volunteer Leader with us:
Prior to expedition all volunteer Leaders will receive training and support. We ask that first time Leaders cover the cost of their flights as part of the group booking booked by British Exploring Society, who will then reclaim the cost from Leaders. Flight costs will be covered for all returning Leaders. Leaders will need to provide their own personal kit as well as vaccinations and visas (if applicable). Leaders may claim expenses for UK training events. All other expedition costs are covered, including insurance, specialist equipment, expedition food and accommodation.
Community - Our Volunteer Leader community come from a variety of backgrounds, ages and professions bring a diverse range of skills and experiences. Not only will you become a Member of British Exploring Society after leading with us but will leave with strong bonds and shared memories.
Courage - Set in wild, remote and sometimes harsh environments that young people aren’t used to. Working in this environment and supporting young people requires Leaders to show courage and be adaptable and dynamic, allowing for a unique and new experience - 100% of Leaders said they had acquired new skills.
Challenge – Our expeditions can be challenging. To prepare Leaders we provide high quality training and personal development. This offers Leaders the opportunity to develop & stretch their skills, such as youth work, technical, leadership and facilitation - 74% of Leaders said that volunteering with us had furthered their career.
Self-belief - From beginning to the end, you will be supported whilst developing their confidence. - 90% of our Leaders said they were more confident after expedition.
Upcoming opportunities for Knowledge Leaders in 2024
Science and media play an integral role on our expeditions, as such British Exploring Society recruits passionate, skilled volunteer Knowledge Leaders. These Leaders bring with them experience working with young people in remote settings and can inspire and facilitate the personal development of young people through curiosity in science, media and the environment they are in. Working in partnership with other expedition Leaders, they will be responsible for safety, wellbeing and development of 8-12 Young Explorers. They will take lead on designing and delivering activities and projects including the John Muir Conservation Award, scientific fieldwork and creative media activities. Our aim is to recruit multiple Leaders, with expertise across these areas and allow Leaders to play to their strengths and expertise to design and deliver engaging, relevant and meaningful projects for our Explorers.
Previous projects on expedition have included biodiversity surveying in the Amazon, environmental change in the Himalayas or expedition filmmaking, journaling and painting. Previous Knowledge Leaders have been academics and scientists with fieldwork or expedition experience, educators experienced in delivering environmental education (e.g Forest Schools) or have been creative professionals including filmmakers, animators and journalists. Expeditions are between 2 and 5 weeks long and take place during academic holiday periods. We are currently recruiting volunteer Leaders for all our expeditions for Summer 2024 and 2025.

- Our structured mentoring programme supports 8-11 year olds with their social and emotional development before they transition into secondary school.
- As a mentor, you will hold weekly one-to-one sessions of 1-3 hours. You will help to build confidence, resilience and support your mentee to manage feelings through a series of fun and positive experiences and activities.
- The weekly sessions can be during the weekday after school or at the weekends.

What you will be doing.
This volunteer role is within our Marketing and Communications team, working closely with the Marketing and Communications Manager and other roles across Family Futures, to achieve our fundraising targets, objectives and values. Our therapy, adoption and fostering services for children and families depend on our financial resilience.
By volunteering as a Funding and Grants Volunteer you will be helping us develop our fundraising strategy to ensure we have funds for projects which will improve our therapy space and better serve the community through enhanced services.

Finance Lead
- This role involves leading on the financial affairs of the Foodbank and ensuring that they are conducted within the required legal, accounting and good practice conventions.
- It is also the responsibility of the Financial Lead to work in partnership with the Chairperson, Foodbank Manager, Treasurer and other Trustees to ensure the financial viability and development of the organisation.
- Ensure the Trustee board fulfils its financial responsibilities.
- Ensure that the Foodbank has proper systems for budgeting, financial control, insurance, and reporting.
- Work alongside the Market Drayton Foodbank Treasurer to inform the Trustee board members of the finances of the Foodbank by written report, at least on a quarterly basis ensuring that the board have a clear picture of the financial health of the Foodbank.
- Ensure that financial reports:
- Are comprehensible and properly discussed at Trustee board meetings.
- Are provided in the proper format and at the proper time, as required by the relevant charity regulator body (Charity Commission of England & Wales, Charity Commission of Northern Island or OSCR etc).
- Have properly appointed auditors or independent examiners (on income over £25k).
- Are reported on an annual basis at annual general meetings (AGMs).

What will you be doing?
New College Durham is looking for volunteers to join its Board of Governors and use their personal and professional knowledge and experience to shape the strategic direction of the College.
The Board is responsible for the success of the College. Its role is to establish a vision, mission and strategy, provide financial oversight, hold the College’s senior leaders to account for the quality of education and ensure risks are managed appropriately. As a Governor you will support and challenge our executive management team and help the Board make decisions that will impact on student achievement, their longer-term outcomes and the future direction and growth of the College. We want people who bring new ideas, strategic thinking, are willing to ask questions and speak their mind - we are ambitious, dynamic and forward focused and we hope you are too.
This voluntary role offers great opportunities for personal and professional development. We will work with you to align your expertise and interests with the Board’s needs. You will receive ongoing training, have access to a mentor and be reimbursed for expenses. You would be expected to attend six corporation meetings throughout the year, one or two committee meetings per term and the Annual Strategic Planning Day. We would also encourage you to get involved with College life by attending College events to meet students, staff and stakeholders such as award ceremonies, staff and student conferences, performances, exhibitions and stakeholder events.
You will be part of a thriving organisation with an excellent reputation and you will gain experience working alongside our Senior Leadership Team and Board members from a wide variety of backgrounds.
What are we looking for?
We welcome applicants from a wide variety of backgrounds - people who can contribute their professional and specialist skills to the Board as well as their lived experience. We are keen to recruit a diverse Board with a mix of skills and perspectives to ensure effective governance, supportive challenge, sound decision-making and membership that reflects our wider community.
We are currently seeking applications in particular from those with experience in health and life sciences, digital, STEM disciplines, HR/people management, sustainability and green skills manufacturing but we operate in a fast-moving environment and would encourage applications from all individuals with a passion for education whatever their skill set.

As a Board member you will use your skills and experience to help our senior leaders shape the College’s strategy and meet our vision of becoming a leading provider of Further and Higher Education in the North East region, nationally and internationally. You will contribute to the College’s wider strategic plan including finance, estates, IT, HR, curriculum and student experience and help us make the big decisions that will drive the future direction of the College.
It's an exciting time to join the Board with a number of major initiatives in development as we continue to grow our high quality professional technical and general education provision and invest in our fantastic facilities.
Commitment:
Estimated time needed is up to five hours per month.
Six corporation meetings per year plus Annual Strategic Planning Day / one to two committee meetings per term. Meetings are usually 4.00pm to 6.00pm. Meetings are usually in person, with the option of online attendance where required.

The administrative assistant will be assisting in general administrative support. They will have a close dialogue with key stakeholders, funders and donors to create relationships to help the organisation move forward.
The requirements for the job is basic office and communicating skills.
The administrative assistant should be keen on learning and developing new skills within the Organisation.
There will be opportunities to develop skills within several different units of the organisation such as; Marketing, Funding, Finance, HR and Legal.
The position will give the volunteer the opportunity to get insight into these different units, and the choice to develop oneself within the one (or several) that becomes of most interest, while at the same time getting versatile, transferable skills that can be applied throughout the organisation.

The volunteering program with QMC School requires a minimum of 16 weeks of commitment. We are looking for someone who can offer 12 hours a week, Monday - Friday.
