Role Summary

As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). You also contribute to the charity’s strategies, leadership and governance as a member of the Executive Team. Ultimately, your role is to generate new knowledge; and communicate knowledge, ideas and emotions to change hearts and minds, creating tangible reductions in alcohol harm across the UK.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Leadership, strategy & planning

1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.

2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.

3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.

4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.

Research

5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.

6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.

7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.

8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.

Public Affairs

9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.

10.  Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.

11.  Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.

12.  Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.

13.  Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.

14.  Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.

15.  Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.

16.  Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.

Team Leadership and Management

17.  Lead and manage the research and public affairs team(s), ensuring excellent line management.

18.  Lead the process of recruiting and inducting new team members, as appropriate.

19.  Proactively develop your own skills and experience as well as those of staff within your team.

Cross-organisational Role

20.  Act as a spokesperson for the charity at high profile events and across media, including radio and TV.

21.  Be an active and positive member of the charity’s Executive Team.

22.  Work with colleagues across the charity to support their work and to act as ‘one team’.

23.  Work particularly closely with colleagues in the Wales office, optimising opportunities for joint working.

24.  Contribute actively and positively to the development of charity-wide strategies and activity.

As the Major Gifts Fundraiser, you will play a pivotal role in developing and sustaining fundraising relationships, working closely with the Director of Development, Chief Executive and Senior Management Team. This is a new role for the Circuit, replacing a volunteer. In designing the position, the Circuit has aimed for maximum flexibility to secure the best candidate for the role. Initially, the person will need physically to attend some meetings to familiarise themselves with the Circuit's operations and ensure a smooth hand-over. The Richmond & Hounslow Circuit comprises seven churches in southwest London. As with all Methodist circuits, these churches function autonomously yet collaborate closely in their ministry and mission efforts. The Circuit oversees joint resources, including staff and property. Head of Wellbeing and Grants – The Solicitors’ Charity

We’re looking for a Head of Wellbeing and Grants to provide collaborative leadership to the Wellbeing and Grants Team and its operations, which are the centre of the Charity’s core charitable activities. As well as running a personal caseload, you’ll work with the team to develop a systematic approach/methodology to case management practice and review, rooted in case management best practice.

Salary c£56,500 to c£63,500 rising to c£57,500 to £64,500 after a 6-month probationary period. The point on these salary ranges at which you will be paid is dependent on your location.

Flexible working arrangements are possible, including homeworking with occasional attendance in person at meetings, largely in central London. Most staff work from home, though we also have an office in southwest London (SW12).

The Head of Wellbeing and Grants role

We have recently agreed our strategy for 2024-2026 and one of the focus areas will be, with the CEO and others, to ensure the successful implementation of the 3-year Strategy, focussing on the Wellbeing and Grants aspects of the strategic aims.

As holder of this senior role, you will lead in collaboratively designing and implementing a consistent methodology for, and systematic approach to, new and existing clients contacting the Charity. You’ll also ensure that the tools and technology used to do this are in place, used consistently and reviewed regularly. As well as management oversight of the Wellbeing and Grants Team, you will also hold a personal caseload and be expected to support Case Managers with particularly challenging cases.

We’re looking for someone with at least 10 years’ experience in casework practice in a client support or advice setting dealing with conversations with people with complex needs and sometimes in distress.  And with at least 3-5 years’ experience in leading/managing a client support function like casework or grants/awards team.

Other key demonstrable skills and experience include having completed other relevant qualifications/training and courses in the sphere of advice and support work e.g. counselling, case management practice, therapeutic approaches et al.

Venue Management 
MIH has a part-time Venue Manager who is responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the ‘Liberty Hall’ kitchen venue. The Head of Operations  will oversee them and support key areas of venue management in the following ways:

• Manage relationship with venue partner ‘Clapton Commons’ to ensure key services of venue are running smoothly and represent MIH in oversight committee meetings; 

• Ensure venue and office equipment is safe to use and repaired/replaced/PAT tested on time;

• Ensure the venue meets the latest Health & Safety requirements, Fire Safety Standards and is fully accessible;

• Support acquisition of new kitchen equipment when required, such as ovens, hobs etc either from a donated source or purchased from a supplier;

Finance

• Organise quarterly budget meetings between the core delivery team and Finance Manager to review budget and expenditure; 

• Ensure the finance team understands the requirements and deadlines of board meetings and provide reminders to them for preparing the required financial reporting.

The Head of Finance will manage the high-performing finance team consisting of a Management Accountant, Assistant Accountant and Finance Business Partner. Sitting in the Business and Resources Directorate the team are instrumental to the successful running of the RCR. In this role you will be responsible for the operational finance function which handles accounting, financial reporting, planning and transactional activities as well as supporting longer-term strategic planning.

As a finance professional you will use your expertise to further support the RCR by delivering the organisations financial objectives and build strong working relationships with managers to equip them with the tools to make good financial decisions. Furthermore, you will support the Executive Director, Business & Resources in the delivery of effective risk management activities and reporting, lead discussions on how our financial controls and processes may need to change and adapt, shape and drive business performance to ensure your leadership of the finance function results in the delivery of excellent services.

What you’ll do:

• Lead, motivate and develop the finance team to deliver essential business services adapting and anticipating changes in business needs.
• Develop, agree and maintain a suite of internal service standards to meet business needs.
• Plan and lead the organisation’s financial budget process ensuring a comprehensive capture of business needs and advise SMT and managers.
• Ensure timely and accurate monthly financial management accounts are produced according to appropriate standards.
• Maintain a suitable suite of business financial policies, processes and controls that meet the business needs and are compliant with legislation and external standards.
• Lead the provision of commercial advice to directors, managers and staff to ensure best practice on procurement and contract management.

What you’ll need:

• Experience of operating successfully at a Finance Manager or Head of Finance role in a comparable organisation.
• A strategic and critical thinker with the ability to develop a team to deliver on long term goals.
• Understanding of risk, risk management processes and the use of risk analysis to help plan and develop organisations.
• Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical/non-professional audiences.
• Skilled manager of people, able to bring together, motivate, coordinate and develop a team.
• Excellent commercial skills, including the capacity to lead or support negotiations and to influence and motivate others.

Chalk Farm Tenant Management Organisation (TMO) is looking for a competent leader with a passion for social housing to manage our housing organisation.

Located close to the historic Camden Market, the TMO provides housing services and community activities for residents of the estate. Sustainably funded by Camden Council long term, this is an ideal opportunity for a candidate with experience in management and a real interest in social housing, who values the autonomy of working in a small and close knit organisation.

As estate manager, your main duties will be to:

1. Give the TMO the strategy it needs to deliver an excellent housing service for residents.

2. Ensure that the TMO is adequately and responsibly resourced.

3. Ensure that the TMO complies with the Management Agreement signed with Camden Council, all applicable legislation, and current best practice.

4. Provide effective day-to-day leadership, management and supervision of staff.

5. Uphold a service culture which puts residents’ satisfaction at the heart of delivery. 

6. Ensure the effective delivery of the TMO’s housing management functions.

7. Work in partnership with the committee to deliver continuous improvement and good value across all TMO managed and contracted services.

This could be you if you have:

• 4 years+ experience of managing staff, and at least 2 years experience of reporting to a board;

• good knowledge of housing law or current issues relating to social housing;

• experience in procuring contracts and managing contractors;

• a proactive, can-do attitude, and an ability to motivate a team;

• excellent numerical and IT literacy, including a record of preparing and scrutinising budgets;

• Either a Level 4 Certificate in Housing, or an undergraduate degree (2:1 or above), and are prepared to enrol in the 1 year online Level 4 course by the Chartered Institute for Housing. 

The TMO is prepared to fund the Level 4 course, and to support a bright manager with a successful track record of delivery to transition into social housing.

As an Area Manager you will give leadership, direction and guidance to the staff of Medaille Trust to ensure the provision and development of a high quality service in line with the Trust’s Mission, Values and Strategy.

You will have a good understanding of the CQC framework relating to Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.  You will carry out quarterly assurance audits in all safe houses ensuring any appropriate action is taken where necessary.

You will line manage, induct, mentor, coach and support Service Managers.  Additionally, you will ensure that any complaints, grievances and disciplinaries are investigated and responded to in an effective and timely manner in line with Medaille Policies.

Although the post is home based, the post holder will be expected to travel frequently to our safe houses within the South and London areas with some overnight stays.

You must have previous experience in a relevant sector or experience of working with adults that are vulnerable.  Experience of managing staff, carrying out line management, supervision and appraisals is essential.  Additionally, you must have experience of setting up Service User Engagement groups.
