About us
Who we are
On the 1st March 1960, Samaritans founder, Chad Varah made the inaugural call to our helpline on the original number MAR9000. Samaritans of Liverpool and Merseyside was the second branch of Samaritans to open in England, and we have been open to callers for more than 57 years. We're very proud of our heritage.
Today, from our base on Clarence Street in Liverpool City Centre our 120 volunteers support more than 40 000 callers every year by phone, email, SMS and face to face visits. We work with prisons, schools, rail companies, community groups, charities, and many other local organisations to provide support and raise awareness of our work.
We're reliant entirely on the generous donations of the public, and do not receive any funding.
We're best known for our volunteers who support callers by telephone, known as Listening Volunteers. To run a service like ours, we need an huge team of volunteers in many different roles such as fundraising, publicity and outreach, all working together to help achieve our collective vision: that fewer people die by suicide.
