About us
Who we are
Founded in 1617, The Society of Apothecaries was set up as a members’ association specifically to support doctors, pharmacists, and other health professionals, with the purpose of furthering education, research and innovation in the medical field. Today, the Society, continues to support medical students who are struggling financially by offering grants to students in hardship at every Medical School in the UK. Through our Centre for Health Studies, we run 7 post-graduate Medical Diplomas (including HIV Medicine, Genito-urinary Medicine, Conflict & Castrophe Medicine and Tropical Medicine and Hygiene). We also run courses in the History and Philosophy of Medicine and Pharmacy and an extensive lecture programme open to the General Public.
The Society is a Livery Company of the City of London, so we have an important political and heritage function in our local area. We are based at the wonderful C17th Apothecaries Hall, a Grade 1 listed building and Scheduled Ancient Monument. Our members attend a wide range of fellowship and chartiable events, which we host at the Hall. The Hall is also a hire venue for our events business.
