This is a new role for the Circuit, replacing a volunteer. In designing the position, the Circuit has aimed for maximum flexibility to secure the best candidate for the role. Initially, the person will need physically to attend some meetings to familiarise themselves with the Circuit's operations and ensure a smooth hand-over. For the right person, though, there will be considerable flexibility about how the duties are fulfilled in the longer-term. It is specifically expected that the role will allow for flexible scheduling to accommodate other responsibilities, including caring.

The Richmond & Hounslow Circuit comprises seven churches in southwest London. As with all Methodist circuits, these churches function autonomously yet collaborate closely in their ministry and mission efforts. The Circuit oversees joint resources, including staff and property. Presently, it employs four full-time ordained ministers, one full-time lay pastor, and a part-time administrator. As a part of the Methodist Church, its mission is “to respond to the gospel of God’s love in Christ and to live out its discipleship in worship and mission”. To fulfil this mission, the Circuit fosters a broad spectrum of ministry within its congregations, focusing on worship but also engaging in outreach to the homeless, asylum seekers, new parents, and various other groups. Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is seeking an EU/Western Europe Researcher to contribute to our work on advancing corporate respect for human rights and the environment by companies in and from the region, with a focus on mandatory due diligence and similar policy and legislative debates.

Business & Human Rights Resource Centre works with diverse allies and partners to put human rights at the core of companies’ business models and end abuse; to support communities and workers in securing their rights and accountability for corporate abuse; and to encourage governments to create the right regulation and incentives to uphold human rights in business. We are a global organization rooted in five continental regions, comprised of a Global Team of 80. Global Team members work with a rich network of human rights advocates in ten languages, and place strong emphasis on our alliances with grassroots organisations facing often profound inequalities of power in protecting their rights. Our work covers the full gamut of human rights in business, with particular focus on three thematic programmes: just energy transition and natural resources; accountable digital technologies; and workers’ rights in global supply chains. These are strengthened by three cross cutting themes: civic freedoms and human rights defenders; corporate legal accountability; and racial and gender justice.

The position

The successful candidate will work closely with the EU/Western Europe team to contribute to our work in the region, with a particular focus on debates and developments around corporate accountability regulations in Europe. The Researcher will be responsible for updating and maintaining the digital portal with relevant news items and information on policy trends related to the region, engaging with European companies to seek responses to allegations of human rights abuse, both within the region and in their value chains, as well as supporting our efforts to promote effective implementation of (mandatory) due diligence.

Responsibilities

• Media monitoring: Conduct media monitoring online in English and German to identify news reports, NGO/civil society/trade union statements and reports, and policy development relating to business and human rights in the region as well as cases of alleged human rights abuse by European companies.
• Website content maintenance: Publish relevant items in English and German on the Resource Centre website, curate information, news and resources on online portal pages relating to Mandatory Due Diligence, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and Beyond Social Auditing.
• Company responses: Invite European companies in English and German to respond to allegations of human rights abuse and concerns raised by civil society about their conduct; maintain contact database information.
• Contribute to regional strategies and priorities: With partners and colleagues, support the EU team to implement our regional strategy, with a particular focus on the effective implementation of emerging and existing mandatory due diligence laws in Europe.
• Develop high quality written materials: (Co-)author materials for our website, including newsletters, blog posts, workshop summaries, guidance documents, briefing notes and papers.
• Outreach and representation: Help sustain and build a network of contacts in the region. Occasionally represent the Resource Centre at meetings, conferences and workshops.
• Administrative and project support: Assist as necessary with ad-hoc administrative tasks including donor reporting, organising travel and workshops.
• Team work: Participate in regularly scheduled Global Team and EU team calls, and ad-hoc calls and meetings as needed.

The Hepatitis C Trust has developed projects nationally whereby peers use their lived experience of injecting drug use and hepatitis C, to provide education and training to increase awareness of hepatitis C, reduce stigma, and promote access to testing and treatment for people living with hepatitis C across Bristol & Weston areas. 

Do you have experience of working in drug services and with volunteers? Have you been affected by hepatitis C or have you supported anyone who has hepatitis C? We are looking for a passionate and skilled peer lead who has excellent communication and organisational skills. We require a good standard of education and welcome creativity and innovation in all our work.  

Working as part of a growing team, this post will continue the development and delivery of the Hepatitis C peer project, recruiting and supporting volunteer peers across Bristol and surrounding areas. Working in partnership with hepatitis C clinical teams, drug and alcohol services and homeless service providers, the post will coordinate delivery of educational workshops, promote and facilitate increased testing for HCV, targeting marginalised and disadvantaged communities and ensuring referral and ongoing support through treatment and harm reduction approaches to prevent reinfection and other harms among PWID.

Our senior team has an exceptional skill set, and we recognise that candidates with all the skills we need simply may not exist. But don’t worry, if you have some of the skills we want but lack others – we will train you to fill those gaps. This will include thorough training in the delivery of our well-respected training courses. 

Our staff have the choice to work wholly or partly from home or from our office in Tooting, SW London, during regular operational hours (08.30-17.30). If working from home, staff must have a working environment suitable for holding video-call meetings/training sessions with clients. 

Wherever you work, you will interact regularly with senior team members to gain new skills and exchange ideas.  

This job will require regular travel to deliver training courses (mostly in the UK, estimated 2 to 8 days per month) and may also involve international travel, including to developing countries. So, applicants must be willing to travel (in line with UK government guidance).

• At least one first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal

Salary and annual leave 

Salary will depend on qualifications and experience but is expected to be between £35,000 and £38,000 p/a (depending on experience). Annual leave is 25 days per year plus public holidays (33 days).

Betknowmore UK is collaborating with partner organisations to work as part of a wider team, on the delivery of the Armed Forces Gambling Harms Support Network (AFGHSN). The work will include the provision of training and gambling awareness activities, helping to raise and address the subject of harmful gambling. Working and engaging with armed forces support and personnel services, individuals harmed by gambling, their wider network, stakeholders, and other relevant groups within the veteran and active armed forces communities, the aim is to create trained personnel able to support the work of the AFGHSN.​

A key aspect of the role will be working with individuals experiencing gambling harms, requiring an empathetic and compassionate approach and awareness of the complex issues being addressed. A robust management of safeguarding and safe working practices is essential.​

It is essential that you are based within one hour travelling time of London, as extensive travel to London and the UK is expected.

Role Purpose

An armed forces veteran or someone closely involved with the armed forces (a family member for example), the post holder will also have a unique insight on gambling harms, and their impact on health and wellbeing specifically within the military.

The Armed Forces Peer Aid Coordinator will initially prioritise engaging with veterans and military organisations to deliver the AFGHSN training programme, along with gambling awareness activities. The purpose is to upskill key armed forces personnel and those in connected communities, enabling and enhancing their knowledge, skills and confidence to address gambling harms. ​

The second key responsibility is to recruit, train and support Peer Supporters to deliver safe, effective support for individuals and their networks that have been harmed by gambling. It is expected that Peer Supporters will be individuals with ‘lived experience’ of gambling harm themselves or as an ‘affected other’.​

The post holder will work with the Head of Peer Support Services to support the development and maintenance of the systems and structure of the service, ensuring that governance and polices are implemented, safeguarding and safe working practices are strictly adhered to, and a clear understanding established of how the service integrates with other support and treatment networks.​

The AFGHSN Peer Aid team will ensure that the support and working relationships are safe and secure, and the health and wellbeing of all participants is intact. Peer Support will be in a befriending capacity and should be provided with a considered and transparent approach. Other support activities will be developed, such as group support and weekly meet ups.​

Stakeholder management is essential to the role, as is establishing and maintaining relationships within the AFGHSN, alongside confident communication skills to deliver presentations and other promotions within armed forces community, education and health centres to help grow and evolve the service.
