Job description

Community Mental Health Peer Support Worker (Peer Support Groups)

Community based work across the Sutton borough, and at the Age UK Sutton Offices, 1 Carshalton Road, Sutton SM1 4LE. The role requires frequent working and attendance at meetings, and cross organisation peer support meetings

Age UK Sutton has been commissioned by SW London St Georges Mental Health Trust as part of their Community Mental Health Transformation Programme, to provide peer support for people over 50, who are currently accessing mental health support or have done so in the past.

The aim of the service is to support clients through peer support for early intervention, help avoid crisis or deterioration, but also as a step down from more intensive medical support to help reintegrate with the community.

The roles based at Age UK Sutton have a focus on providing peer support services for older people (50+).

You will be working with people over the age of 50, with enduring and / or severe mental health problems and who may be less likely to approach mental health services, understand that there is a mental health concern, or generally are less well served by mental health services. In playing this focused role in a larger programme, you will have the opportunity to share and draw on experience and knowledge from a wider group of Peer Support Officers across the partnership.

A key aspect of this new service is that staff use their own experience of mental health difficulties (for example through lived experience, either personal or professional, or caring for someone with mental health difficulties). You will work collaboratively with people within the service to offer emotional and practical support towards goals that are defined by the person, focusing on the person’s strengths and personal resources.

The peer group service will offer short term facilitated group peer support programmes, to enable clients to develop their own peer support networks and work on strategies to improve ability to manage their condition.

This role will focus on organising and facilitating the Peer Support Group element of the contract and will report to the Senior Mental Health Peer Support Worker.

Age UK Sutton is an independent local charity based in the South West London Borough of Sutton.

This role will report to the Senior Mental Health Peer Support Worker.

The full role profile and person specification can be found inside the job pack.  You can download this job pack by clicking on the link under "job attachments" in the grey box on the right hand side of the vacancies page.
