Who we are
Alfanar (meaning ‘beacon’ in Arabic) is not a traditional charity. As the Arab region’s first venture philanthropy, we change dynamics on the ground through social investment.
In slums, villages, and vulnerable communities, we identify and back ambitious social enterprises working to sustainably educate, employ and empower thousands. We work with them to develop clear visions and plans, to troubleshoot obstacles and to celebrate successes.
At Alfanar, we see every day that by emboldening the powerful spirit of social entrepreneurship in the Arab world we can create lasting social and economic impact.
Since 2004 we have worked towards a future where individuals are never denied the opportunity to realise their full potential, where civil society’s agenda is set by those it serves and where donor dependency becomes a thing of the past.
