Who we are

“Every day, we match incredible individuals willing to donate their blood stem cells or bone marrow to people with blood cancer and blood disorders who desperately need lifesaving transplants.

It all began in 1974. With her three-year-old son Anthony in urgent need of a bone marrow transplant, Shirley Nolan set up the world’s first register to match donors with people in desperate need.

Now, our charity helps three people each day find that lifesaving match. But without you, there is no cure.

We're a forward-thinking, friendly organisation that values each and every person in our team. As the nature of our work is helping people in such a personal and direct way, we have a fantastic working environment.

We like to set ourselves big goals. Our work has been consistently successful because we are innovative. So our challenge doesn't just come from the pressure of meeting existing commitments, but from our need to constantly improve. The bigger and better we become, the more lives we can save.

Our location

Our donor management and core management teams work from our head offices, in Hampstead, North West London, close to Hampstead Heath. Our Histocompatibility Laboratory and Research Institute are located on a separate site 500 metres away, in the grounds of the Royal Free Hospital. We also employ a nationwide network of fundraisers and donor recruitment managers. In September 2008, we opened the Anthony Nolan Cell Therapy Centre in Nottingham, which deals with research for our cord blood bank.”
