About us

Who we are

refugeeEd aims to strengthen and develop the international refugee education community, using the skills and expertise of qualified teachers.

Around 62,000 refugees are stranded in Greece.

Thousands of children and teenagers are being denied access to an adequate education after being out of school for years. Many adults are in need of language education to help them secure a job and future in Europe.

Yet media attention is fading away and large NGOs are pulling out of the region. It is mostly small, volunteer-run grassroots organisations tirelessly filling the gaps in education provision.

Our aim is to improve the quality of education on offer through collaboration and resource-sharing. We have a strong network of grassroots education organisations that need support. Most of these are operated by wonderful volunteers, not many of whom have a background in education.

Our focus so far has been to develop and share resources for effective teaching in this context and to partner volunteer teachers with organisations where they can be of most use as a volunteer. This is either as: a) long-term volunteer teachers, who can volunteer for a month of more, build up a relationship with students and make an impact; and, b) short-term project mentors, or experienced teachers who can use their specialist skills to develop the education programme and lead training.
