Who we are
Rubbish Friends (Stratford-upon-Avon) was started three years ago by one person with a great idea. Becky moved back to her home town and wanted to make new friends while doing something something genuinely useful. She chose to collect the growing amounts of litter she saw on public spaces and get as much of it as possible recycled.
Since that first litter pick, advertised on Facebook, hundreds of people of all ages and ablities have taken part in picks across the town and collected hundreds of bags of rubbish, much of which has been recycled instead of going to landfill or causing damage to wildlife.
Rubbish Friends has inspired and supported groups in local villages, across the UK and further afield.
And Becky has made loads of new friends!
The Group has also launched campaigns such as the Pause for A Straw campaign, encouraging a more considered use of plastic straws in our tourist friendly town.
Becky has been invited to speak at regional and national conferences about the Group's success at reaching people across the community, offering them the chance to make a difference to their immediate environment and connect with their neighbours. Our incredible volunteers have attended events across the county, from volunteer forums and environmental action days to Stratford's River Festival, to spread the word and encourage others to join in or set up their own groups.
Productive partnerships with local businesses, local authorities, schools and colleges, charities and social housing providers has helped Rubbish Friends to do as much as possible as cost-effectively as possible, involving people who often find it difficult to join in.
At the end of 2017 Becky felt that the Group needed to take the next step and become a charity (or Charitable Incoporated Organisation) and recruited a small but dedicated Board of Trustees to provide support and governance. We are holding our first AGM this year and have lots of exciting plans for the future.
