Who we are

SCOTLAND: The Big Picture is a soon to be charity that advocates for rewilding as a positive and progressive pathway to breathe new life into our damaged and degraded ecosystems, so that wildlife flourishes and people thrive.

Despite its beauty and drama, Scotland has become a nature-depleted nation. Unraveled by a few centuries of use and misuse, millions of treeless acres dominate the map. Many species that were once prolific now teeter on the edge, and invisible are the animals hunted to extinction.

Our mission is to rewrite this story.

Our Story

Founded by a group of professional communicators with many years of experience in conservation media, SCOTLAND: The Big Picture was established in 2015, becoming the first organisation in Scotland wholly dedicated to rewilding advocacy and communications.

Today as a small, agile charity, our commitment to rewriting nature’s story is stronger than ever. The ecological unravelling that has beset Scotland’s recent history needs to be known and understood, but at heart, we are forward-looking and solutions-focused. 

Through our work we engage with a diverse spectrum of people, recognising that their choices and perceptions are key to rewilding being rolled out at the scale necessary to combat the climate and biodiversity emergencies.

Our task is to unite people around a shared vision of a wilder tomorrow.

Our vision

Imagine a country where wild forests teem with life,

where rivers brimming with salmon and trout flow freely,

where wetlands are shaped by beavers and echo to the calls of cranes,

where healthy peatlands regulate climate and purify water,

where oceans support an abundance of life,

and where communities are flourishing, while nature is allowed to plot its own course.

Now imagine this country is Scotland.

What we do

Rewilding advocacy 

We want everyone to see the Big Picture and to reimagine Scotland’s land and seas thriving with life. Through impactful communications, sharing knowledge and stories, we help drive positive behavioral change.

Wildlife Comeback

We actively support the return of missing or threatened native species to their former range and promote the ecological restoration of habitats that they depend upon.

Rewilding and people.

We work with communities and businesses to demonstrate that nature-rich landscapes provide a wide range of social and economic opportunities.

Our ethos

We recognise that perceiving the Scottish landscape differently might not be an easy shift in thinking for everyone. We are committed to promoting rewilding as a huge opportunity and an integral part of a fair and progressive society, but we are not in the business of telling people what they should think and feel. 

We work with honesty and transparency and within a respectful dialogue that recognises different people's belief systems.
